Alternative Dispute Resolution In U.S. Bankruptcy Practice, Jacob A. Esher
Alternative Dispute Resolution In U.S. Bankruptcy Practice, Jacob A. Esher
University of Massachusetts Law Review
The use of ADR in bankruptcy cases, while firmly established in concept across the nation, has been realized in a minority of jurisdictions. Mediation training of judges, lawyers and professionals of other disciplines, together with the continued development of ADR programs, is necessary to achieve the vision of a judicial system in which both adjudicative and non-adjudicative, or negotiative, dispute resolution services are available to all parties in all cases.

All Faculty Scholarship
The Families Matter initiative was designed as a major, multi-year undertaking to develop legal practice methods and approaches to reduce the destructive consequences of the family legal process. The initiative was intended to respond to the need for deep and meaningful reform of the family law process.
Convened in June 2010 by the University of Baltimore School of Law Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts (CFCC), the Families Matter Symposium brought together an interdisciplinary group of family law experts for two days at the University of Baltimore to identify problems regarding the practice of family …

An Analysis Of Employment Barriers Facing Blind People, William O'Donnell
Public Affairs Capstones Collection
Blind people, the target population being analyzed, possibly face higher rates of unemployment or underemployment compared to others with disabilities. They face higher poverty rates than any other minority group or group of people with disabilities. Typically, various statistics cite that 70% of working-aged blind people are not in the workforce. Federal acts have been implemented to increase employment outcomes in an attempt to improve employment outcomes for all with disabilities. The ADA and ADAAA been implemented to mitigate and/or eliminate barriers. This study used qualitative research to analyze data from participants to investigate whether or not they were employed …
Connecting The Dots: Forming A Uniform Voter Identification System Through Established Law, Louis A. D'Amarino
Connecting The Dots: Forming A Uniform Voter Identification System Through Established Law, Louis A. D'Amarino
University of Massachusetts Law Review
The 2002 Help America Vote Act requires election officials to request photo ID for first time voters who register by mail. Some states took this a step further and required all voters to present photo ID in order to exercise the franchise. These laws have attracted a great deal of attention recently because of the belief that these laws disenfranchise voters. However, what is needed is a uniform system that allows voters access to the ballot and also protects the integrity of the ballot. This note argues that all Congress has to do is connect the dots in several federal …

Training Law Enforcement In Mental Health: A Broad-Based Model, Rachael Elaine Hatfield
Training Law Enforcement In Mental Health: A Broad-Based Model, Rachael Elaine Hatfield
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Police officers respond to many calls involving people suffering from a mental illness; yet many law enforcement training programs and workshops do not include mental health training. A literature review was conducted to explore the problems resulting from the lack of mental health training available for law enforcement officers and identify specialized training programs currently being implemented to address those problems. The review identified several program models being implemented throughout the United States including: Joint Police/Mental Health Team Model, Mobile Crisis Unit Model, Crisis Intervention Team Model, and the Broad-Based Training Model. These models include empirically supported components used to …

Pedagogical research often focuses on learners’ experience of technologyenhanced learning environments. It is widely accepted that effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in learning requires the learner to be already fluent in them (Lai and Morrison 2013: 154). If this is the case, then practitioners also need to be competent, yet the digital literacy of today’s learners often appears greater than that of practitioners. This translates into a big gap between learners and practitioners in ability and confidence in the use of ICTs.
In this paper, we present the outcomes of a research project funded by the University …
Response To Mental Health Calls: The Frontline Perspectives Of Police Officers, Communicators And Administrators, Sarah C. Dougall
Response To Mental Health Calls: The Frontline Perspectives Of Police Officers, Communicators And Administrators, Sarah C. Dougall
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of frontline police personnel of a mid-sized police service in Southern Ontario. As the prevalence of mental illness increases, so do the calls for assistance to police services. Police officers often find themselves on the frontline and are often the first responders to mental health calls when an individual is in crisis (Wells & Schafer, 2006). With the majority of current research being quantitative in nature, this qualitative study allowed the voice of frontline police personnel to be heard in order to provide a complete picture of …
Education And Training Of Specialist Sexual Offence Investigators In Victoria, Australia From 2009 To 2011, Jennifer Anne Turnley
Education And Training Of Specialist Sexual Offence Investigators In Victoria, Australia From 2009 To 2011, Jennifer Anne Turnley
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The topic of training specifically designed for investigators of sexual offences has received little attention from academic researchers to date. Previous studies have not described training provided to police investigators of sexual offences in Australia. This thesis developed Turnley’s Framework for the Examination of Police Training in Sexual Assault Investigation, to examine and describe a Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigative Teams (SOCIT) Course, provided to Victorian Police from 2009 to 2011. This entailed triangulation of findings from non-participant observations of one SOCIT Course, with quantitative and qualitative data sourced though an in-depth interview with course trainers; feedback sheets voluntarily …
