Strangers there are among us, practicing with weapons for something they believe might come - something some of them believe should come. Militia men, patriots, self-proclaimed true Americans. Chosen people. What are we, members of the power elite, the academy, the legal intelligentsia - the other chosen people - to make of them? Sideshow freaks may titillate even a scholar, but they rarely, if ever, inform. Is there more here?

The scope of animal rights is much broader than the vast majority of individuals believe. People spend little time considering how our legal system's treatment of animals affects society. Thw law, created to protect beings from harm, has time and again proven itself a stubborn, static creation. Hozever, through the efforts of people who have recognized the law's shortcomings and have sought to correct thm, justice may eventually prevail. Martha Nussbaum's graceful book Poetic Justice is an elegant brief for the importance of our capacity for imaginative "fancy" to our moral and legal lives. Imaginative fancy, Nussbaum argues, allows us to know the internal substance and quality of the lives of others. It allows us to come to appreciate, to understand, to share, and ultimately to resist others' suffering. It is, in short, the means by which we come to care about the fate and happiness of others.
