Bob Dylan’S Lawyers, A Dark Day In Luzerne County, And Learning To Take Legal Ethics Seriously, Randy Lee

Randy Lee

This article examines the life of Bob Dylan and how his views can be used to improve legal ethics. Bob Dylan's views are applied to the legal ethics issues faced by the juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania’s Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice's call "to get serious" about legal ethics. "If we are, however, to get serious about legal ethics, then we will first have to see if we can “make any sense of it,” “pull it apart,” and see if any of it can fit back together in a meaningful way, in other words, do the kind …

The Aspiration To Be A Catholic Social Scientist In The Eyes Of Robert Coles: The Search For Wisdom In An Information Age, Randy Lee

Randy Lee

The Catholic social scientist seeks to understand his world so he can know his God. He is called by love to the questions that he addresses, and the answers he finds to those questions draw him to a call of service, a call to make a life other than his own at least a little better. This article seeks to consider five pieces of advice that Dr. Coles offers to those aspiring to be Catholic social scientists. First, work …

Judaism And John Paul Ii: Coming To Grips With What Law Means In The Hands Of God, Randy Lee

Randy Lee

Throughout his papacy, Paul John Paul II stressed the necessity for Catholics to learn from their “elder brothers,” the Jews, both so Catholics would better understand their world and also so they could better understand their own Catholic faith. Throughout his own life, Pope John Paul II learned five lessons about law from his Jewish brothers and sisters. First, he learned that law should be made not as men are inclined to make it, “carried away on the tumultuous wave of self-interest and instinct,” but that law must be made as God makes it. Second, in the spirit of God, …

Finding Marriage Amidst A Sea Of Confusion: A Precursor To Considering The Public Purposes Of Marriage, Randy Lee

Randy Lee

Before we can consider the public purposes of marriage in America, we must understand what marriage means in America. In trying to understand what marriage means, we realize how convoluted our definition has become. Without even reaching the issue of same-gender unions, the United States Supreme Court has seemingly led the way over the last forty years in confusing the concept of marriage as both a legal and social institution, ultimately reducing it to a temporary, limited, and potentially harmful relationship to which neither sexuality nor procreation need be bound.
By their insistence in characterizing marriage as a right, the …

When A King Speaks Of God; When God Speaks To A King: Faith, Politics, Tax Exempt Status, And The Constitution In The Clinton Administration, Randy Lee Dec 1999

When A King Speaks Of God; When God Speaks To A King: Faith, Politics, Tax Exempt Status, And The Constitution In The Clinton Administration, Randy Lee

Randy Lee

During the Clinton Administration, the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") and the Department of Justice ("DOJ") broke new ground in the enforcement of the tax code's ban on "partisan political activity" by tax-exempt religious organizations. President Clinton, meanwhile, used church buildings and religious services for political campaigning and made political speeches on behalf of candidates that intertwined the political and the religious. Thus, while the Clinton Administration clarified the role of religious exercise and expression in some areas of public life, like public schools and the federal workplace, Administration activities clouded the role religion is to play in political campaigns.
