This paper presents a discussion of economic issues regarding the recent influx of illegal immigrants into the USA and is based on a review of economic literature about the issues. It uses a set of studies to frame the economic issues in terms of the current ongoing debate regarding the benefits and costs accruing to the US economy from the upsurge in immigration. A Call For Refuge: The Case Of Forced Marriages, Emily A. Harrell

This case note examines the ramifications of the Second Circuit Court of Appeal’s recent decision in Gao v. Gonzalez, 440 F.3d 62 (2d Cir. 2006), holding that women who were forced into marrying within a Chinese community where forced marriage was condoned and enforceable qualified as a “particular social group” eligible for asylum within the meaning of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Gao brings into question the position of the United States and the duties owed to refugees in such circumstances. This essay presents a brief overview of the United States’ immigration policy with respect to sponsorship laws, as well as a brief introduction to the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and how it has affected these laws. This essay also illustrates the extent of judicial deference toward Congress in the realm of immigration. Following this introductory material, there is a discussion of the traditional and modern view of homosexuals as pertains to immigration law.
