On late evening of October 7, 2010, in the 5600 block of South Kilbourn Street, Chicago, 89 year-old Andri Jakymec (who suffers with Alzheimer's disease) and his 84 year-old wife were confronted by members if the Cook County Sheriffs Department who were looking for drugs. These officers entered the city of Chicago to raid the Jakymec home. They used a battering ram to knock down the front door of the home. Once they gained entry, an officer threw a grenade (it was either a flash grenade of percussion grenade). Witnesses say the officers were there for over 45 minutes. Within …

U.S. Supreme Gun Holding, Officer Ardelean & Problematic Deployment Of Officers, Christopher C. Cooper Dr.

The U.S. Supreme Court in its decision overturning Chicago’s gun ban issued a stinging indictment of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the politicians who regulate it. The Court wrote: "If (the) safety of . . . law abiding members of the community would be enhanced by the possession of handguns in the home for self-defense, then the Second Amendment right protects the rights of minorities and other residents of high-crime areas whose needs are not being met by elected public officials." The National Black Association (NBPA) recognizes that there are hardworking police officers in Chicago, contemporaneous with recognizing fix …

On June 4, 2010, when Chicago Police Officer John Ardelean walked out of a Chicago courthouse a free man, in the face of evidence that he was drunk when he crashed his SUV and caused the deaths of two Mexican-American men, it became clear that more than 39 years Post Serpico police reform in the United States was undone in one morning court hearing. For obvious reasons, Ardelean’s case has garnered national attention because of the judge’s comments and ruling. In particular, the judge’s disturbingly harsh criticism of the police lieutenant who ordered Officer Ardelean arrested for drunk driving. Public …

A Police department’s officers are trained to enable [U.S.] Constitutional due process safeguards, armies are not designed with this purpose-- armies are trained to kill. The suggestion of the National Guard to be deployed in black and Mexican neighborhoods in Chicago is an outgrowth of the scary trend toward militaristic policing by many police agencies in the U.S. (Chicago in particular). The problem is compounded by many men with militaristic aspirations, but lacking courage for military service; rather using police work and low-income residential communities as way to achieve military aspirations.

Broken U.S. Police Culture And Lack Of Police Temperament Explain The Infamous Gates-Crowley Encounter, Christopher C. Cooper Jul 2009

Broken U.S. Police Culture And Lack Of Police Temperament Explain The Infamous Gates-Crowley Encounter, Christopher C. Cooper

Any knowledgeable cop can tell you that Dr. Gates was moments away from being tasered or shot. And, that but for Henry Louis Gates’ friendship with the president of the U.S., he would have been just another statistic. When a citizen dares to disagree with an officer—he or she goes to jail. Astonishingly, the prosecutor and the judge and the whole criminal justice system accept the officer’s false account of events and probable cause. And, it happens again and again, but perhaps not anymore---maybe now with less frequency because of an encounter between a small-city cop and a renowned university …

MEDIATION TRAINING TO IMPROVE POLICE SOCIAL INTERACTION SKILLS. THE FEBRUARY SHOOTING DEATH OF AN UNARMED AFRICAN IMMIGRANT, AMADOU DIALLO, IN A HAIL OF 41 BULLETS FIRED BY FOUR WHITE NEW YORK CITY POLICE OFFICERS HAS FOCUSED ATTENTION ON MISTREATMENT OF PEOPLE OF COLOR BY POLICE NOT ONLY IN NEW YORK BUT THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.
