The Modern American Entrepreneur: Characteristics, Formative Legislation, And Modern Education, Jeremy S. Office

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This research began by exploring traits and characteristics of the American entrepreneur. It continued by offering a history of these individuals, focusing primarily on the history of laws and regulations which have both positively and adversely affected the practice of entrepreneurialism in the United States. Current laws that affect entrepreneurship, along with the current state of entrepreneurial education in business schools, are explored in depth. This study concludes that the current system of business regulations and entrepreneurial education are flawed and that their failings have produced generations of business students who are unable to reach their full potential. A brief …

Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa May 2010

Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The majority of the theoretical and empirical literature on police patrols and crime has concentrated on the logical assumption that more uniformed preventative police patrols reduce crime. However, few studies have examined the comparative relationship between more police officers doing preventative patrols in a specific area and crime rates and response to calls for service. The objective of this research was to examine whether more uniformed police officers, doing routine preventative patrols, assigned to an area the size of a small city reduces class one crimes (robbery, residential, and commercial burglary and auto theft). The principal intention of the study …

A Critical Analysis Of The Theoretical And Empirical Literature Comparing The Effects Of Traditional Versus Community Policing On Quality Of Life And Associated Quality Of Life Issues, Rodney Polite Feb 2010

A Critical Analysis Of The Theoretical And Empirical Literature Comparing The Effects Of Traditional Versus Community Policing On Quality Of Life And Associated Quality Of Life Issues, Rodney Polite

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

There are two major issues that will be addressed in this study to determine if they influence the selection of an appropriate policing strategy. The first is citizen perception of whether crime has decreased or increased in their community. The second is whether the length of time a citizen has lived in the community has an effect on their perception of crime and their attitude towards a specific policing strategy.

Historically, each policing strategy, although at times labeled differently (professional policing, team policing, neighborhood policing, zero-tolerance policing), has evolved and adapted based on various dynamics within police organizations and the …

Factors Influencing Police Officer Marksmanship During Qualifying Drills, Kelly Kennedy Apr 2009

Factors Influencing Police Officer Marksmanship During Qualifying Drills, Kelly Kennedy

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Police departments across the country are interested in reducing the costs of retraining and improving the rate of retention of the officers they are training. If police officers can be better trained in the skills necessary for marksmanship due to improved evaluative methods by instructors then the rate of progression in skill development could be accelerated. The purpose of this non-experimental, exploratory (comparative) and explanatory (correlational) survey research was to examine the relationships among demographics, handgrip, firearms experience, physiological changes, environmental factors, and psychological state for police officers during qualifying shooting drills, and to determine if Marksmanship during qualifying shooting …

Perceived Justice And Barriers And Facilitators To The Attainment Of Leadership Positions In Local And County Law Enforcement Organizations In The State Of Florida, Delsa R. Bush

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Disparity in leadership positions within organizations continue to exist along racial and gender lines even as organizations become more diverse. The numerous studies investigating race, ethnicity, gender, and the attainment of leadership positions within organizations focus primarily on the glass-ceiling effect. Few have empirically addressed the issue of the glass-ceiling effect in law enforcement organizations. Previous research suggested that several factors might affect leadership positions, i.e., human capital assets, demographic characteristics, organizational characteristics, procedural justice, distributive justices, barriers and facilitators to career advancement, institutional values, racism, and organizational culture. The glass ceiling effect, which encompasses a majority of these factors, …

Police Chiefs' Use And Executive Subordinates' Perceived Use Of Non-Performance And Performance Based Criteria In Promotional Decisions: Organizational Mobility Channels, Bill D. Press

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to investigate police promotion and channels of mobility from an "appointed perspective" by those who do the appointments, as well as those chosen for the appointment. There were two ultimate goals of this study. The first was to describe the characteristics of police chiefs and subordinate police executives, and the importance of non-performance based criteria and performance based criteria used in promotion decision making by police chiefs and perceptions of use by subordinate police executives. The second was to extend the intra-organizational mobility model developed by Beehr and Taber (1993), with four additional non-performance …

Examining The Post September 11, 2001 Practices Of Accredited And Non-Accredited Law Enforcement Agencies In The Aspects Of Training, Legal And Service Delivery, Eugene G. Savage

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Homeland security measures and the preparation of local law enforcement are reviewed, in light of September 11, 2001, to determine their effect on the Constitutional rights of citizens, the delivery of law enforcement services, e.g., call response and the training methodologies, and the fiscal impact to fulfill the new policing mandates. The study reviews aggressive measures, normally vested with federal law enforcement agencies, to determine if local police are also utilizing similar methods for the sake of national security and if such measures are undermining ethical and legal practices previously exercised by local police. This research also examines the distinction …

A Comparative Review Of A College Education's Effect On Law Enforcement Officers Relating To Internal Affairs Complaints, Bill Griffin

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this research is to determine if a relationship exists between higher education levels and misconduct allegations for Deputy Sheriffs. Official documentation from 128 internal affairs reports were collected from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Significant relationships were found to exist between higher education levels and the misconduct allegations. While some college exposure may be beneficial for job performance, a four-year degree may not yield the desired results.

A Qualitative Study Of Bullying Behavior In Federal Law Enforcement: An Examination Of Former Officers' Perceptions Regarding The Problem, Rande W. Matteson

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this phenomenological research project was to study and review through naturalistic inquiry, the perceptions of former federal agents and officers as to whether they believe they were bullied at their workplace, and if so, what did those participants do to cope or adjust to the bullying behavior. Multiple sources for data collection were deployed to explore and examine whether former agents perceive they were bullied at work and what mechanisms those employees found were helpful as coping strategies.

This research project used a non-random, purposeful sample selected from contacts established through the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association. …
