Student unrest on university campuses has been and continues to be an on-going concern for both campuses and the communities in which they reside. Historically, if students and/or faculty perceive either a lack of legitimate means to express their issues or unfair outcomes resulting from those means, then demonstrations ensue. Police are frequently involved in the arrest of demonstrators, and some confrontations, unfortunately, lead to violence, including death. In the past five years, there has been tragic loss of life on campuses in Haiti, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and India and student and faculty protests have occurred in the United States, …

CNCR-Hewlett Foundation Seed Grant White Papers
Reconciliation between countries following a war or a series of wars has attracted little scholarly attention as a phenomenon to be studied even though it receives journalistic coverage and past cases of reconciliation have been extensively described. This paper uses four international events datasets to explore whether reconciliation events have a discernible impact on the relations between countries, and if so, the nature of that impact. The paper describes the objectives of this project, the hypotheses tested, the data used, and the results obtained. The results suggest that reconciliation events have an impact, at least in some cases. However, limitations …

CNCR-Hewlett Foundation Seed Grant White Papers
This study contributes to school-based violence prevention programs by describing typical violent interactions. The findings come from the content analysis of transcribed interviews with 58 African-American middle school students who reported their participation in 121 violent incidents. The most frequent opening moves were offensive touching, interfering with possessions, hurtful play (including teasing), backbiting, requests to do something, and insults. About half the incidents occurred in school and a quarter took place at home. Respondents who acted violently often interpreted the situation as one in which they were being attacked or threatened. Other interpretations were that antagonists thought they had done …
