How U.S. Government Policy Documents Are Addressing The Increasing National Security Implications Of Artificial Intelligence, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Artificial intelligence is affecting many areas of our lives and governmental policy. National security is one arena in which artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important and controversial role. U.S. Government and military agencies are producing a steadily expanding corpus of publicly available literature on this topic. This literature documents how these agencies have this topic's national security implications historically and currently while also addressing potentially emerging national security issues where artificial intelligence will intersect with national security. This presentation demonstrates examples of the growing variety of publicly available national security artificial intelligence literature while also addressing the implications of …
Non-English Materials For The English Speaker : European Languages, Erin Gow
Non-English Materials For The English Speaker : European Languages, Erin Gow
Faculty Scholarship
So many legal materials are in languages other than English worldwide, that it is inevitable that most of us will need to find or access one of these documents at some point. Foreign, comparative, and international law (FCIL) librarians often work with materials in languages in which they are not fluent, and can provide useful ideas and insight for the non-FCIL specialist faced with this type of research. This portion of a 2019 AALL webinar titled "Non-English Materials for the English Speaker" focuses on European languages, and provides practical guidance in finding English translations of European laws, tips and techniques …

Promoting Discipline Specific Literacy For Law & Paralegal Studies Students: Libguides As Transitional & Professional Tools, Marissa Moran, Kimberly Abrams
Publications and Research
Developing LibGuides for Law and Paralegal Studies students at New York City College of Technology arose from the following question: how do we change the way legal studies students think of the Library as a resource to better assist them in their transition to college level-research and a future career as a paralegal. At the heart of this question is the importance of discipline-specific information literacy at the college and professional levels. Many students have difficulty with locating relevant information to complete course assignments partly because library resources are both fragmented and cohesive. Thus, while part of the transition to …

Intersection Of Law, Science, Technology, & The Humanities, Marissa J. Moran, Yu-Wen Chen, Sarah A. Standing
Publications and Research
The challenge of how best to incorporate the wealth of educational/research material currently available through technologies and drawn from the social, cultural, economic, political and legal aspects of our society today has brought together professors from three distinct disciplines and schools at New York City College of Technology, CUNY to research, design, and create innovative new courses and to continually revise content and methodology in existing courses. This dynamic and interdisciplinary approach to learning allows our undergraduate students opportunities to research and apply their knowledge to existing societal issues, in “real-time” to analyze, discuss, and suggest ways to improve upon …

Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent
SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)
•From 2001-2010 the number of piracy incidents spiked. Somali piracy differs from other forms of piracy because it has a distinct modus operandi. Whereas most piracy is theft, Somali attacks focus primarily on capturing vessels and holding them for ransom. •The vessel attacks occur primarily in the high seas, outside the territorial jurisdiction of any one nation. Therefore, Somali piracy cases have been heard in various courts around the world. Many cases have been prosecuted in Kenya, Seychelles, the Netherlands, as well as many other countries around the world. •This analysis examines the nature of these prosecutions, and whether there …
