The Commonwealth of Virginia markets itself as “The Largest Data Center Market in the World.”In 2019, the Northern Virginia market alone was the largest in the United States by inventory, with room to grow. In 2021, data centers in Northern Virginia required an estimated 1,686 megawatts of power; that number is expected to increase by 200 megawatts in the near future, reflecting data centers currently under development. For reference, in 2022, it was estimated that more than 100 homes could be powered by one megawatt of solar power in Virginia. Historically, data centers have been located in the Commonwealth due …

Simplification of tax law is complicated. Yet, political rhetoric surrounding tax simplification often focuses on simplistic, superficial indicators of complexity in tax law such as word counts, page counts, number of regulations, and similar quantitative metrics. This preoccupation with the volume of enacted law often results in law that is more complex in a real sense. Achieving real simplification—a reduction in costs faced by taxpayers at various stages in the tax planning, tax compliance, and tax enforcement process—often requires enacting more law, not less. Colorado And Washington Got Too High: The Argument For Lower Recreational Marijuana Excise Taxes, Jeremy P. Gove
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
This article discusses the tax schemes of newly legal recreational marijuana in both Colorado and Washington and how these taxes are similar to other taxes the state levies. This article then examines the policies behind the taxation of marijuana, including competing theories of taxation. Finally, this article concludes that while both states succeed in generating revenue, the taxing scheme employed fails to optimize revenue, creating deadweight loss for both the state economy and the recreational marijuana market.

This article discusses the tax schemes of newly legal recreational marijuana in both Colorado and Washington and how these taxes are similar to other taxes the state levies. This article argues that the group tax exemption and consolidated group returns provide immense assistance to nonprofit healthcare organizations, because of simplicity, financial benefits and efficiency benefits. Part III will discuss what it means to be a tax-exempt entity and the legal basis for its existence, the historical basis of the exemption and its various rationales including relief of government burden, subsidy and income measurement theories. Part IV will explain the tax-exempt status in health care, the effects of the Affordable Care Act on the uninsured population, and key differences between for-profit entities and non-profit entities. Why tax? Are taxes truly "what we pay for [a] civilized society?" Or, are taxes merely collected "to pay for the responsibilities we have assigned to our [g]overnment?" Despite the debate that might erupt over whether the implementation of responsible government is synonymous with the promotion of civilized society, all entities need money to operate. The government is no different. So, while the initial answer to the opening question is simple, it only begs the more serious of inquiries; the government having the power to tax, so, what shall be taxed?
