Corporate Tax Competition: An Examination Of National Tax Reaction Functions To Corporate Tax Rate Reductions In Other Countries, Yaw O. Awuah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This dissertation primarily examines tax competition at the national level, with a particular focus on the tax reaction functions of countries within the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). There are three different studies in the dissertation. The first study uses the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) as a setting to empirically examine whether members of the OECD reduced their own statutory corporate tax rates in response to the US statutory corporate tax cut ushered in by the TCJA in a process of tax competition. The second study is a non-empirical examination of tax competition and …

What Is Insurance? An Analysis Of The Tax Deductibility Of Captive Insurance Premiums, John D. Patten

Honors Capstones

What is insurance for the purposes of a tax deduction? The Internal Revenue Code does not define insurance. Without this definition, taxpayers using alternative insurance products to manage their risks must look to case law to determine whether their arrangements count as tax deductible insurance or non-deductible self-insurance. This paper dives into the four prongs of insurance: insurance risk, risk shifting, risk distributing, and commonly accepted notions of insurance. This paper looks to cases that have dealt with the deduction of captive insurance premiums to provide better insight into the practical application of this test. After discussing the evolution of …

The 2017 Tax Cuts And Jobs Act: Analyzing Its Financial Impact On Division I Universities, Judge Nash Mcwithey

Honors Theses

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has had a substantial impact in the United States since its inception in 2017. This tax code overhaul has had a profound effect on the way Division I universities operate their athletic department operations and fundraising efforts. By creating new channels of federal tax revenues and eliminating deductions, such as the “80/20” premium seating deduction that has been used by universities, athletic programs have already begun to see a shift in how they must operate. This modification is done in order to avoid any major repercussions from the new tax code. This thesis discusses …

The Shifting Scheme Of Athletic Fundraising: Investigating Private Giving Under The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act, Kirsten Nicole Brown Jan 2020

The Shifting Scheme Of Athletic Fundraising: Investigating Private Giving Under The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act, Kirsten Nicole Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

With a consistent decline in state funding to public higher education, institutions have become more reliant on private funding to institutional support. The shift in government policy through the introduction of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) (2017) created financial uncertainty within athletic departments and university foundations. The TCJA eliminated the 80 percent tax deduction on season ticket donations and increased the standard deduction. With these policy changes, athletic development officers speculated a decline in donations in 2018 and beyond. Using quantitative methodology and a longitudinal approach, this study examined athletic donations from January 1, 2013 to July 31, …

Consumer Response To Increases In The State Cigarette Tax, Patrick Nolan Jan 2017

Consumer Response To Increases In The State Cigarette Tax, Patrick Nolan

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

In this paper I look at consumer responsiveness to the cigarette tax. Cigarette taxes are motivated by wanting to raise money for the state and wanting to deter smoking in the state’s population. Obviously reducing smoking in the population would reduce the externalities caused by smoking. We know the health effects are completely detrimental to the consumer, and detrimental to those around them. In addition to this we know that tobacco is an addictive substance, meaning than is inherently extremely inelastic.

To find on how consumers respond to tax increases I conducted a difference in difference analysis of tax revenue …

As the federal government seeks ways to stimulate our economy and reduce our national debt, understanding public attitudes on the role and size of government and the taxes that support it is important. Challenges And Responses : An Analysis Of Economic Development Among Some East Asian Newly Industrializing Countries (Nics) Or Areas; The Effect Of Their Using Tax Incentive Systems To Attract Foreign Investment With Lessons From Taiwan's Tax Incentive System As An Illustration, Li Pai Chia Kuo

Theses and Dissertations

Sustained economic development since World War II was the phenomenon of the "East Asian Miracle," although the glory was tainted by the impact of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong were among the East Asian Newly Industrializing Countries (NICs) who shared the phenomena but each had unique circumstances with which to deal. China, on the other hand, stagnated before the 1978 opening to the world but has improved spectacularly economically since, and retains its momentum going into the new millennium. The motive and dynamics of the East Asian economic phenomena have been studied thoroughly, …
