The purpose of this comment is to highlight the new procedural and substantive rights that are now guaranteed to the person sought to be committed for mental illness. The writers seek to evaluate it against a background of social and medical desirability, as well as constitutional mandates. One should keep in mind that our current method of dealing with the mentally ill is by no means either universal or necessary.
