Censoring Hate In The Music Industry: Shifting Perspectives In Pursuit Of Cultural Equity, Joey A. Tan
Censoring Hate In The Music Industry: Shifting Perspectives In Pursuit Of Cultural Equity, Joey A. Tan
Backstage Pass
Music is intended to be expressive and unconstrained, a tool of communicating emotion and bridging humanity. As such, censorship is widely despised among music creators, listeners, publishers, distributors, and other music industry stakeholders. “Freedom of expression,” however, proves to be an applicable argument for both sides of the matter when the censorship concerns hate directed at marginalized communities. Analyzing the concept of censorship through the lens of those with privilege and power fails to recognize the extent to which hate speech impacts its victims and the indirect recipients of the message. As a powerful influencer of popular and youth cultures, …

Undocumented Student Success: Navigating Restraints Related To Retention, Ronald Hallett
Ronald Hallett
Undocumented college students face multiple barriers. This case study explores how a group of undocumented Latino/a students maintained a peer network. Social Capital And Homeless Youth: Influence Of Residential Instability On College Access, William Tierney, Ronald Hallett
Social Capital And Homeless Youth: Influence Of Residential Instability On College Access, William Tierney, Ronald Hallett
Ronald Hallett
This article examines the experiences homeless youth face and the influence of social networks on their education. Using a social capital framework, we analyze the experiences that are different for poor youth in general and those homeless. Data used include interviews with 123 homeless youth and more than 40 policymakers, school counselors, and after-school program coordinators. Youth identified three aspects of their lives that influence network development associated with college access: mobility and stability, meeting basic needs, anonymity and shame. The temporary nature of their residential stability requires a systematic response by educational institutions.

In 2002, an overweight, sedentary, and middle-aged man suffered a heart attack during his first workout with his “certified” personal trainer. During the workout, the man repeatedly asked to stop because he was experiencing fatigue, heat, thirst, breathlessness, and chest pain. The trainer responded to requests to stop and complaints of fatigue by questioning his client’s masculinity and by continuing the workout. In the lawsuit that followed (Rostai v. Neste Enterprises, 2006), the court did not have the option to consider a statutorily defined standard of care since no licensing requirements existed for those who design and/or lead fitness programs. …

A Model For The Analysis Of The Language Of Lawyers, Robert Alex Chaim
A Model For The Analysis Of The Language Of Lawyers, Robert Alex Chaim
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Lawyers have recently become a favorite target for criticism from both within and without their profession; nowhere are they more vulnerable than in their use of the English language. Whether they imitate cuttlefish by obscuring their paths with ink or simply reflect the complexity of twentieth century civilization with their language presents a question not soon to be resolved. Yet since law must serve society and since language must serve law, the questions concerning lawyers' uses and abuses of language will continue to press. Though common in casual debate, most generalizations about the language of lawyers are difficult--if not impossible-- …

The Significance Of Treater Competence In Either Behavior Modification Or Transactional Analysis Treatment Of Juvenile Offenders, Paul Mccormick
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Results of the Youth Center Research Project were almost equally favorable for each other's two schools. The parole-violation rates of the wards released from both institutions dropped from 43% to 31%, a considerable improvement when compared with the two control California Youth Authority schools continuing failure rate of 46%. These figures were for twelve-month parole-exposure periods. But the study’s major hypotheses were not verified. The more mature youths did not do better with TA than with B Mod, and the lower-maturity wards did no better with B Mod. In fact, one classification of higher-maturity wards did a little better with …
