Analyzing The Potential For Universal Disarmament Of Autonomous Weapons Systems Or How I Learned To Stop Working And Love The Killer Robot, Frank Nicholas Kelly
Brooklyn Journal of International Law
Lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) have recently become the subject of debate among scholars, world leaders, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and the popular media. While the dangers of autonomous robotics have existed for decades in science fiction, technology has only recently made the implementation of robots capable of military combat a real possibility. With the advent of this technology, many government leaders, politicians, scientists, and business leaders are advancing the argument that just because autonomous weapons can exist does not mean they should. Some countries, however, have demonstrated a strong interest in the continued developing LAWS, making universal disarmament unlikely. This …

Swimming Upstream: The Need To Resolve Inconsistency In The Fda's Fishy Regulatory Scheme, Kelsie Kelly
Journal of Law and Policy
The citizens of the United States rely on the federal government to maintain the safety of their food through effective regulation. As the technology used to develop food has advanced, the outermost limits of the current regulatory framework are being tested. The result has been a circuitous and ineffective attempt to regulate transgenic organisms, intended for human consumption, using multiple agencies and a patchwork of laws. The ability to incorporate DNA from nearly any organism into the genome of another provides immense potential for innovative new food products, but may also allow for unintended health and environmental consequences. Proper regulation …

The Race Is On! Regulating Self-Driving Vehicles Before They Hit The Streets, Jack Liechtung
Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law
As the world braces itself for the unveiling of autonomous vehicles, the idea of regulation and oversight has gone largely undetected. Though some states have already begun enacting legislation ahead of the technology’s wide release, the regulatory landscape across the country is in disarray. It is imperative that both manufacturers and consumers be given some sort of uniform understanding as to how the automation is overseen throughout the manufacturing process and how liability will be levied in the case of inevitable mistakes on our nation’s roadways. This Note proposes that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration be responsible for providing …
Biometric Data Collection In An Unprotected World: Exploring The Need For Federal Legislation Protecting Biometric Data, Carra Pope
Journal of Law and Policy
Currently, there are no federal statutes which protect or regulate the collection of biometric information. Because biometric identifiers cannot be changed if compromised, it is increasingly crucial that this data be protected by law. This note examines the barriers to federal legislation which would protect and regulate biometric data, as well as the steps that should be taken to enact federal biometric legislation in the future.
