A Sanctuary World: Understanding The Past, Present, And Future Of Sanctuary Movements, Annaleigh Cummings
A Sanctuary World: Understanding The Past, Present, And Future Of Sanctuary Movements, Annaleigh Cummings
Undergraduate Theses
In the late 1970s through the 1980s, sanctuary movements emerged in the United States to support and provide sanctuary for immigrants and asylum seekers without a legal status of U.S. citizenship. This movement has its roots in the ancient church tradition of offering sanctuary to people accused of crimes. Religious leaders offered protection against the government in the name of their beliefs. It is a cycle that has often been repeated throughout history from the medieval European era to abolitionists helping runaway enslaved people in the United States to the contemporary movements existing today. This project explores and analyzes three …

Punishment For The One Who Betrays Trust ( Jahed Al-Aaryah) Between The Punishment And Discretion, Adnan Smadi
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This essay treats a subject of great importance. It is denial of borrowed objects, namely an object lended to others to use it without spoiling, then obsecuring it. A sequence to such abehaviour is the creation of doubt among people and it also causes the relations and the good deeds to be cut among people. Hence, Islam legislated apenalty to such aconduct in order to stop it. As scholars (Fukaha) were different for the estimation of the penalty to this type of state, the subject is needed to be in restighted to put the foundations to this state and to …

Linguistic Branching Of Semantics In Arabic: A Social Approach, Hanan Ismael Amayreh, Mohammad Ismael Amayreh
Linguistic Branching Of Semantics In Arabic: A Social Approach, Hanan Ismael Amayreh, Mohammad Ismael Amayreh
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
Linguist Branching is appropriate for Arabic Language as words branch out mostly from roots, and every root becomes a tree, which is different from others, not because of the tree itself, but because of what society uses. Language branching expresses the controversial relationship between the language and the rules that govern it from one side, and society’s preference of certain terms over others from the other side. This study tries to answer the following questions: does the language impose the used words, or does it offer options for society to choose what suits it? The study reaches a conclusion that …

From my three months of study in Rabat, Morocco, seeing how each person approaches the homeless animal differently, I write on how three important overarching areas: religious, legal, and societal, discuss how animals should be treated.
In this paper, I will be analyzing religious texts, legal writings both in place and in draft, and will rely on external works written animal markets and on the school …

Tinjauan Yuridis Penggunaan Dinar Dan Dirham Di Indonesia (Studi Kasus Putusan 202/Pid.Sus/2021/Pn.Dpk Tentang Pasar Muamalah), Nabila Nabila, Diah Arini
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
For centuries, the dinar and dirham have been recognized as the most stable and sharia-compliant official trading instruments. In Indonesia, dinars and dirhams may be used with specific qualifications. However, the precedent for arresting scholar Zaim Saidi for organizing a muamalah market using dinar-dirham is a bad practice of punishing innovation in the use of dinar-dirham, which reduces the development of the sharia economy in Indonesia. The acquittal of the Depok District Court (PN) No. 202/Pid.Sus/2021/PNDpk proves the ignorance of the state (in this case, the police and the prosecutor's office) regarding the concept of using dinars and dirhams themselves. …

Optimalisasi Lembaga Amil Zakat Untuk Penyaluran Zakat Bagi Golongan Gharimin, Annisa Sucita Fitri
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
Gharimin or people who carry debts are one of eight groups who are entitled to receive zakat distribution (asnaf). Gharimin with certain criteria, in principle, will be helped to pay off their obligations through the receipt of zakat. However, there are many gharimin who have to get back into new debt or loans, either conventional or online loans, which threaten them to pay big interest. It was later discovered that zakat receipts by the Amil Zakat Institution (LAZ), especially those that would be distributed to the mustahik of the Gharimin group, were still not maximized, so high-interest loans were still …

Nopal En La Frente: Racial Passing And The Hidden Indigeneity Of The Los Altos Region Of Jalisco, 1720-1950, Brandon Manuel Márquez
History
When people look at Los Altos de Jalisco, they typically think of this area as representing a pocket of European ancestry in a mestizaje state. Yet this ignores one huge aspect of this region: its indigenous history. Throughout the last three hundred years, the Los Altos region of Jalisco has allowed for the racial passing of many different families. This is all the more significant because many of its citizens have what many believe to be European features- mainly being light hair, light skin, and colored eyes. Because of these perceived European features, many of the Alteños believe that they …

The Anti-Secular Regulation Of Religious Difference In Egypt, Meriam Wagdy Azmi
The Anti-Secular Regulation Of Religious Difference In Egypt, Meriam Wagdy Azmi
Theses and Dissertations
Egyptian religious freedom activists and researchers have for decades called for more secularism to remedy the violations facing religious minorities. Those religious minorities have been subject to attacks for practicing religious rituals and suffered from lack of recognition by the government. As those activists advocated secularism, some academics critiqued it and deemed it the instigator of the very problems it claims to uproot. Saba Mahmood famously argued that secularism is a primary producer of religious tension in Egypt. In this thesis, I argue that it is not the mere regulation of religious difference as a feature of secularism that is …

Civil Disobedience From A Biblical Perspective, Gabriel Reed
Civil Disobedience From A Biblical Perspective, Gabriel Reed
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
To say that civil disobedience is a complicated topic is to severely understate the topic. It is a subject matter that has derived many different and disparate opinions, points of view, and public policies. Specifically, within America today, we observe calls for civil disobedience from both sides of the political spectrum, over several divergent political ideals. These issues are, primarily, driven from both sides’ desire to provide protection and provision for the oppressed and those who cannot necessarily speak for themselves. The definition of who is necessarily oppressed and whom their oppressors are varies from person to person, regardless of …

When Half The Neighborhood Is Missing: How To Overcome Systemic Poverty And Gentrification Following The Models Of Dudley Street And Mission Waco, Kevin A. Brown, Kevin A. Brown, Kevin A. Brown
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
Abstract
By following the examples of Mission Waco and The Dudley Street Initiative, it is possible to renew a sense of beloved community by changing the narrative of poverty and gentrification by rebuilding the village through empowering the poor and marginalized.
Mission Waco and The Dudley Street Initiative are comprehensive sustainable communities because they combine numerous social and economic interventions under developed strategic plans. The principal question that this dissertation seeks to answer is whether these models can be implemented in local communities to help overcome gentrification and poverty. Implementation can be successful if we can identify the problem, rethink …

Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Benefit To Climate-Displaced And Host Communities, Gül Aktürk, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Climate change is borderless, and its impacts are not shared equally by all communities. It causes an imbalance between people by creating a more desirable living environment for some societies while erasing settlements and shelters of some others. Due to floods, sea level rise, destructive storms, drought, and slow-onset factors such as salinization of water and soil, people lose their lands, homes, and natural resources. Catastrophic events force people to move voluntarily or involuntarily. The relocation of communities is a debatable climate adaptation measure which requires utmost care with human rights, ethics, and psychological well-being of individuals upon the issues …
