Intellectual Property, Copyright, And Piracy: A Cultural View, Steven W. Staninger
Intellectual Property, Copyright, And Piracy: A Cultural View, Steven W. Staninger
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
Religion plays a major role in determining culture, and has an important effect on how laws are both written and enforced. The concept of intellectual property varies in different cultural traditions, and the dominant religion of a culture plays a major role in the how copyright is viewed and if it is respected or enforced. This paper briefly evaluates the cultures of three major religious and intellectual traditions to determine what, if any, effect their beliefs and values have on the respect for and enforcement of laws defending intellectual property and copyright.

Splitting Hairs: What Subtle Distinctions Teach Us About Authority, Benjamin J. Keele
Splitting Hairs: What Subtle Distinctions Teach Us About Authority, Benjamin J. Keele
Library Staff Publications
Legal researchers constantly deal with issues of authority. Did the police have authority to search the car? Is this court of appeals decision binding authority on my case? What statutes are authoritative in my jurisdiction? These questions are important, and librarians often help find answers. The question of authority that librarians are best equipped to answer, however, is “How authoritative is this source?”
Technology Management Trends In Law Schools, Carol A. Watson, Larry Reeves
Technology Management Trends In Law Schools, Carol A. Watson, Larry Reeves

It's easy, effective, and it works!

Readers' Copyright, Jessica Litman
Readers' Copyright, Jessica Litman
Open Access Week
An open lecture on reclaiming copyright for readers, listeners, and viewers, given by University of Michigan Law professor Jessica Litman.
A system of copyright protection makes little sense unless it is designed to encourage the use and enjoyment of the works it induces authors to create and publishers to disseminate. Litman argues that a clear-eyed examination of copyright's history reveals that solicitude for readers and members of the audience is, in fact, deeply encoded in copyright's DNA. Recently, readers' interests have faded in apparent importance in the copyright scheme in ways that have unbalanced the copyright system, and undermined public …

This presentation provides exposure to helpful internet resources and discussion of effective strategies to help you answer legal related reference questions in a non-law library setting with skill and confidence.

Free Websites For Virginia Legal Research, Paul Hellyer
Library Staff Publications
It’s no secret that free websites give away content sold by high-cost subscription databases, but you might not know how useful free sites are. If you think there’s always a trade-off between cost and quality, think again. Some free resources for Virginia legal research are as good as—or better than—subscription sites. And some free resources aren’t quite as good as what you can buy, but are an option.
One Mississippi Library’S Experience In Opening Up The State Judiciary To Greater Access By The Library Patron, Stephen Parks
One Mississippi Library’S Experience In Opening Up The State Judiciary To Greater Access By The Library Patron, Stephen Parks
The Southeastern Librarian
Legal materials such as case reporters and case digests can be quite expensive and burdensome for libraries to acquire, due to little use for such materials. Online legal sources such as Westlaw and LexisNexis are rarely an option for these libraries because of their tremendous costs. However, most libraries face legal-related questions from patrons, and librarians lack easily accessible materials to provide the patron an answer.
The staff at Mississippi College School of Law Library decided to do something about this problem by creating a program to provide complete access to the appellate courts of the state of Mississippi freely …

First paragraph:
No one can read everything. We rely on filters to make sense of the scholarly literature, but the narrow, traditional filters are being swamped. However, the growth of new, online scholarly tools allows us to make new filters; these alt-metrics reflect the broad, rapid impact of scholarship in this burgeoning eco-system. We call for more tools and research based on altmetrics.

Emerging Problems In Knowledge Sharing And The Three New Ethics Of Knowledge Transfer, Mikhail Koulikov
Emerging Problems In Knowledge Sharing And The Three New Ethics Of Knowledge Transfer, Mikhail Koulikov
Mikhail Koulikov
Topics related to knowledge management and knowledge sharing have received extensive attention in the recent literature of management and information science. Much of the discussion has focused on how these processes take place - and frequently fail to take place - in formal business, corporate and organizational settings. Knowledge sharing, however, occurs along the entire spectrum of human activity. Often, information and knowledge are shared in ways that appear unregulated and even outright subversive. This paper surveys many of the recent critiques of formal mechanisms of knowledge sharing. It identifies a set of methods, structures and ethics of "informal" and …

Along with the explosion of general purpose apps, come many designed and/or suited for busy, highly-mobile legal professsionals.
