From online embeds to interactive displays, timelines can serve many purposes and tell powerful stories. At the University of Georgia’s Law Library we have teamed up with faculty and staff to bring history to life, engage students, and preserve scholarly and institutional milestones. Through trial and error we have found a variety of tools for creating timelines digitally. In this article we share our four favorite web-based applications for creating timelines including Tiki-Toki, TimeToast, Prezi and Piktochart.

Will An Institutional Repository Hurt My Ssrn Ranking?: Calming The Faculty Fear, Carol A. Watson, James M. Donovan

Argues that faculty members should not view hits to their works in an institutional repository as a drain on their Social Science Research Network rankings. While SSRN excels at delivering their work to the cadre of legal specialists, IRs typically do a better job of presenting it to a broader readership. This expanded exposure should be judged a positive complementary benefit.

Citation Advantage Of Open Access Legal Scholarship, Carol Watson, James M. Donovan

In this study focusing on the impact of open access on legal scholarship, the authors examine open access articles from three journals at the University of Georgia School of Law and confirm that legal scholarship freely available via open access improves an article’s research impact. Open access legal scholarship—which today appears to account for almost half of the output of law faculties—can expect to receive fifty-eight percent more citations than non–open access writings of similar age from the same venue.

Book review of THE PRISON LIBRARY PRIMER: A PROGRAM FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY, by Brenda Vogel (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2009).

This work is a well-organized, thorough, and practical guide to administering libraries in correctional facilities. Vogel, a veteran librarian with more than twenty-five years of first-hand experience as the coordinator for the Maryland Correctional Education Libraries, has written extensively on the topic of prison libraries. While her knowledge and experience lend credence to The Prison Library Primer’s content, Vogel’s unwavering commitment to an often-overlooked community of library patrons makes the book truly inspiring.
