Alien Lawyers In The United States And Japan—A Comparative Study, Kaname Ohira, George Neff Stevens
Alien Lawyers In The United States And Japan—A Comparative Study, Kaname Ohira, George Neff Stevens
Washington Law Review
The steadily increasing economic and social contacts between Japan and the United States are illustrative of a development which has brought lawyers and laymen of all countries face to face with the need for more adequate, and accurate, information about the laws of all countries. Since the lawyer is the fount to which the informed layman turns for legal advice, it would seem quite natural for such a layman, faced with a problem involving foreign law, either to seek advice from his own attorney, or to turn to an alien admitted to the bar of the country, the laws of …

Thirty Years Of Legal Education, Allan F. Smith
Thirty Years Of Legal Education, Allan F. Smith
Michigan Law Review
A generation of law students has moved through the University of Michigan Law Quadrangle since its dedication on June 13, 1934. The prophecy quoted above has been fulfilled, although the process of its fulfillment has not ended and will not end, for the process of law is indeed "an endless 'becoming.' " Despite the difficulties of carving segments from that which is essentially continuous and unbroken, it seems appropriate to pause at this thirtieth anniversary of the Quadrangle and to observe the segment of time which separates the dedication and the present day.
Investigation Of Unauthorized Practice Of Law By Omnibus Proceeding: The Ohio Method, Jerome M. Smith
Investigation Of Unauthorized Practice Of Law By Omnibus Proceeding: The Ohio Method, Jerome M. Smith
Michigan Law Review
The practice of law is impressed with a public interest. Whether by representation in a judicial proceeding or by advice on a legal problem, the lawyer renders professional service to the public. Preserving client confidences, assuring unquestioned loyalty, and rendering expert counsel are typical obligations of the legal profession. Another responsibility of lawyers is that of protecting the public from legal practice by unqualified laymen. Three areas of activity are involved in preventing unauthorized practice of law. Lawyers and public officials must define the practice of law/ investigate and prosecute unlicensed practitioners, and by judicial remedy prohibit further unauthorized practice. …

Legal Education For Certified Specialization, Philip E. Heckerling
Legal Education For Certified Specialization, Philip E. Heckerling
Cleveland State Law Review
The purpose of this paper is to offer a partial solution to the public's loss of confidence in lawyers, suggesting that by means of post-graduate education conducted under the auspices of the various law schools, professional specialization in the law will be encouraged through certification, with the end result that lawyers and the public will both benefit psychologically and economically.
