Breaking ground for the first phase of an $11.7 million Indiana University Law School project on the Bloomington campus are, from the left, Law School Dean Sheldon Plager, IU President John W. Ryan and IU Vice President Ken Gros Louis. The first phase of the project -calls for construction of an addition to the existing Law School building. ·The legislature gave the university authority to spend $5 million for this part of the project. The university will seek authority in the next session of the legislature to complete the project, which will include remodeling and renovation of the existing building.

In 1979, the Washington legislature enacted RCW chapter 19.62, which authorized certain laypersons to prepare documents and instruments relating to real estate transactions. The statute was passed in response to the Washington Supreme Court's decision in Washington State Bar Association v. Great Western Union Federal Savings and Loan Association. In Great Western, the court held that laypersons who received compensation for the preparation of legal documents were engaged in the unauthorized practice of law. The legislature's response, authorizing the activities prohibited in Great Western, raised questions regarding the scope of legislative and judicial power to define and regulate the practice …

Legal Advocacy, Performance, And Affection, D. Robert Lohn, Milner S. Ball

Professor Geoffrey Hazard's lecture addresses appellate advocacy. That advocate's brief is best, he says, that, short of surrender, concedes most to the opposing party. We assume that Professor Hazard would scarcely have ventured out of New Haven to participate in the distinguished Sibley Lectureship merely to commend to the consideration of the audience an interesting but minor rhetorical ploy. Therefore we read his comments as surely implying more. We interpret his lecture as an invitation to rethink the nature of the courtroom event. Attorney Fees: Handling Bankruptcies Without Getting There Yourself, Edwin F. Flowers

By enacting the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978, Congress significantly increased the stature and influence of bankruptcy law in our legal system and in society. Consistent with this, Congress sought to improve the quality of legal services rendered to clients in bankruptcy. cases by enhancing the recoverability of attorney fees for such services. In this article, the author treats the criteria a bankruptcy court will likely employ in deciding the reasonableness and recoverability of an attorney fee for services in cases under the Reform Act.
