A year ago, in December of 1950, when the war in Korea was going badly and the country appeared to be on the brink of general mobilization, it seemed inevitable that the demands of military service would make severe inroads upon this year's student enrollment in the Law School. Such inroads have been made, but although the recall of reservists and the call of Selective Service draftees have drawn into the armed forces many young men who would otherwise be studying law at Michigan, the effect has by no means been as severe as was anticipated. In the spring of 1950, the writer of this report visited the law schools of Georgia on behalf of the Survey of the Legal Profession. These visits were pursuant to the plan for the survey of legal education in America, including all schools whether or not they were approved by the American Bar Association. The primary purpose of this article is to draw attention to the abundance of text materials which are available on Georgia law, and to mention the fields which have not yet been explored by the legal textwriter. No doubt, some of the works mentioned here are unknown to many Georgia lawyers-through no fault of the works themselves or of the lawyers. Five lectures delivered at the University of Michigan February 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27, 1948 on the Thomas M. Cooley Lectureship, enlarged and revised.

First, it is descriptive of the American legal system as it now exists, not of past law and not of legal systems in general. Second, it portrays the legal system as an operating institution. Third, I have given a large place to the discussion of language in relation to law.
