There is an exciting movement toward practical legal education in U.S. law schools. There are many good reasons for this movement, including demand from students and potential students, as well as demand from the employers and clients that will hire those students. Additionally, a plethora of compelling studies strongly suggest that adults learn best through practical, contextual, experiential education.
Yet, many professors in U.S. law schools continue to teach using more traditional methods. There are a number of reasons for this. Perhaps the most widespread reason why professors hesitate to engage in experiential, or problem-based, teaching is the amount of …

In legal education, we tend to focus first and foremost on producing graduates who can effectively serve and thrive in the private for-profit, non-profit, and federal government economies. There are pressing reasons to maintain these priorities. And yet, assuming legal educators come to believe -- as Schragger has (and I have) -- that cities belong "at the center of economic and constitutional thinking," it stands to reason that law schools should find a way to place cities among the subjects at the center of legal educational thinking. Now is the time to consider how law schools can help raise up …

Video: Happy Lawyers Make More Money: How To Achieve Financial Success, Fulfill Your Ethical Obligations, And Manage A Profitable Small Law Firm, How To Manage A Small Law Firm
NSU Law Seminar Series
How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm was founded by attorney RJon Robins. He quickly realized that despite having done quite well in law school, completing a prestigious 9 credit internship with the US Trustee’s Office and clerking for a Federal Bankruptcy Judge, he knew next to nothing about how to actually manage the business of a small law firm.
RJon did eventually discover how to manage a small law firm and was recruited by The Florida Bar’s Law Office Management Assistance Service (LOMAS) to teach his fellow lawyers how to find, fix and avoid the sort of marketing, sales, …

From The Bachelor's To The Bar: Using College Completion Data To Assess The Law School Pipeline, Accesslex Institute
From The Bachelor's To The Bar: Using College Completion Data To Assess The Law School Pipeline, Accesslex Institute
AccessLex Institute Research
The story of declining law school applications is well known among the legal education community. Over 100,000 individuals applied to law school for admission in fall 2004, but demand for legal education has since declined — only 54,000 applicants sought admission in fall 2015. Accesslex Institute examined college completion data to determine whether undergraduate interest in fields most popular among law school applicants has also waned in recent years. In particular, this research brief summarizes bachelor’s degree completion in the top 10 law school feeder majors over the last 10 years, and compares degree production in these fields to those …

Using Advanced Conflict Waivers To Teach Drafting, Ethics, And Professionalism, Edward R. Becker

On a substantive and ethical level, I tell my students to take on faith that if you were to do all of this and take all this into account, if you were to apply the conflict of interest and the disqualifications rules, it could make it extremely difficult or many of the firms involved in these matters to avoid being conflicted out; especially, if the parties and the kind of firms involved were not dealing with these conflicts and issues until a problem arose. The question I ask my students again at this point is what could be done. What …
