Teaching The Wire: Integrating Capstone Policy Content Into The Criminal Law Curriculum, Roger Fairfax

Articles in Law Reviews & Other Academic Journals

When I first proposed teaching a seminar on The Wire at the George Washington University Law School in 2010, I encountered very disparate reactions. Those unfamiliar with the show generally wondered whether the law school curriculum was any place for a course with the name of a popular television drama in the title. Those who had heard glowing things about, but had not seen, The Wire typically professed their intention to watch the show but shared the skepticism of the former group on its suitability as the focus of a law school course. Finally, those who had viewed the series …

Embracing Change in International Program Planning: Strategies for Financing International Programs in Times of Economic Turbulence

Presentation will encourage an open discussion of strategies for developing or continuing economically feasible programs in these difficult times.

Rethinking Overseas Legal Experiences from the Top Down and Bottom Up

With the current strains and pressures that law schools are facing today, the new reality is that beloved programs are being cut--from clinics to moot programs to overseas programs. What is the justification for keeping law school “study abroad” programs? If there are compelling reasons for international legal education, who needs to be convinced and what is the most effective way of doing that?

Discussants:

Amy Sugin, Assistant Dean of Graduate and International Programs, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law

Converging Trends In Legal Education: Globalization Meets Experiential Education

Over the last decade, legal educators have increasingly recognized the need to prepare students for practice in an era of ever increasing globalization. More recently, changes in the legal market have imposed greater pressure to provide more experiential education for our students. To many, these trends create conflicting pressures. This panel will address that challenge and the means by which these trends can be complementary rather than competing, through innovative programs where students have transformative experiences in international legal practice.

Raquel Aldana, Director, Inter-American Program, University of the Pacific, McGeorge …

Teaching The Methods Of White-Collar Practice: Investigatios, Roger Fairfax

Articles in Law Reviews & Other Academic Journals

When Ijoined the George Washington University Law School [GW] faculty after practice as a federal prosecutor and white-collar criminal defense attorney, I quickly learned that a GW law student interested in exploring white-collar crime had a great many courses from which to choose. Several of my full-time colleagues teach courses that cover various topics relevant to white-collar crime, including a computer crimes course, a course in criminal tax litigation, and courses on anti-corruption in government contracting and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act [FCPA]. GW is also fortunate to have a dedicated and talented adjunct faculty, which includes a former senior …
