Blogs And The Legal Academy, Orin S. Kerr
Blogs And The Legal Academy, Orin S. Kerr
Orin Kerr
This paper's focus is on today’s technology and ask whether blogs as we know them today are conducive to advancing scholarship. This paper's conclusion is that relative to other forms of communication, blogs do not provide a particularly good platform for advancing serious legal scholarship. The blog format focuses reader attention on recent thoughts rather than deep ones. The tyranny of reverse chronological order limits the scholarly usefulness of blogs by leading the reader to the latest instead of the best.
This doesn’t mean that blogs can’t advance scholarship. The impact of any blog depends on what its author decides …

Enduring Hierarchies In American Legal Education, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa, Andrew P. Morriss, William D. Henderson
Andrew P. Morriss
Although much attention has been paid to U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of U.S. law schools, the hierarchy it describes is a long-standing one rather than a recent innovation. In this Article, we show the presence of a consistent hierarchy of U.S. law schools from the 1930s to the present, provide a categorization of law schools for use in research on trends in legal education, and examine the impact of U.S. News’s introduction of a national, ordinal ranking on this established hierarchy. The Article examines the impact of such hierarchies for a range of decision making in law school …

Legal Education: Globalization, And Institutional Excellence: Challenges For The Rule Of Law And Access To Justice In India, C. Raj Kumar
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Legal education plays an important role in developing lawyers who act as social engineers and work towards the cause of nation building. In a globalized world, law schools face the challenges of increased foreign competition and reduction of the role of the state. At the same time, globalization affords space for re-examining higher education systems by affording opportunity for establishing global universities with international collaborations and programs. This article examines the role of law schools in India and proposes reforms in Indian legal education system in the light of globalization. It examines how the private sector in India can contribute …

Ranking Law Schools: Using Ssrn To Measure Scholarly Performance, Bernard S. Black, Paul L. Caron
Indiana Law Journal
There are several methods for ranking the scholarly performance of law faculties, including reputation surveys (U.S. News, Leiter); publication counts (Lindgren and Seltzer, Leiter); and citation counts (Eisenberg and Wells, Leiter). Each offers a useful but partial picture offaculty performance. We explore here whether the new "beta" SSRN-based measures (number of downloads and number ofposted papers) can offer a different, also useful, albeit also partial, picture. Our modest claim is that SSRNbased measures can address some of the deficiencies in these other measures and thus play a valuable role in the rankings tapestry. For example, SSRN offers real-time data covering …
