Tribute To Larry Ribstein, Barry E. Adler
Tribute To Larry Ribstein, Barry E. Adler
Michigan Law Review
A law school job talk for an entry-level candidate is an opportunity for the presenter to put his or her ideas before a faculty in the best possible light. A bit of give-and-take is part of the drill, but the candidate can usually expect the talk to stay more or less on course. My own first job talk, though, given at George Mason University more years ago than I'd like to admit, was attended by the thoroughly exceptional Larry Ribstein and so did not unfold in the usual way.
What Ed Cooper Has Taught Me About The Realities And Complexities Of Appellate Jurisdiction And Procedure, Catherine T. Struve
What Ed Cooper Has Taught Me About The Realities And Complexities Of Appellate Jurisdiction And Procedure, Catherine T. Struve
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In this brief essay, I will describe some of what I have learned from Ed Cooper as a fellow participant in the rulemaking process and as a coauthor of two volumes of his Federal Practice and Procedure treatise. To describe everything that Ed has taught me would require much more than the length of this essay. So instead, I will try to offer some representative examples-or, as Ed might say, some "sketches." Because others will discuss Ed's expert guidance of the Rules Committees' consideration of key issues concerning the Civil Rules, my discussion of Ed's scholarship and reporting work will …

Craig Callen: Tributes From The Evidence Community, Richard D. Friedman
Articles
At the wonderful memorial service for Craig Callen held at MSU shortly after his death in April, I had the honor, by reason of proximity, to appear in effect as the representative of nationwide, and even worldwide, community of scholars that has felt his death very deeply. I am grateful for the opportunity to perform this same function in print.

Wigmore, John Henry (1863-1943). Law professor and dean. Wigmore was born and reared in San Francisco. His parents were both immigrants, his mother from England and his father, of English heritage, from Ireland. Harry, as he was known familiarly, was the oldest and most favored of his extraordinarily doting mother's seven children. The family was prosperous - his father had an importing business - and Harry was educated principally in private schools. He then attended Harvard College, prompting the mother to move the family to Massachusetts to be close to him. After graduating in 1883, he spent a brief interlude …

Dedicated To The Memory Of Lee E. Teiteitelbaum, Carl E. Schneider
Dedicated To The Memory Of Lee E. Teiteitelbaum, Carl E. Schneider

When I first met Lee Teitelbaum at a conference two decades ago, I was a novice and he a distinguished scholar. Because my colleagues admired him, I rang his room at the hotel and asked him to join me for dinner. He sweetly agreed. When he opened his door to my knock, I realized that he set standards I could never match-sartorial standards. Who was this king of glory? 1 stood there in my Oshkosh khakis and running shoes, agape and abashed. Despite this unpropitious start, our friendship ripened, and soon I realized Lee set standards of a finer and …

A faculty can make no prouder boast than the claim that some of its members are the preeminent figures in the country in their particular fields. During my years at Michigan, I believe that claim could fairly be made for at least eleven of our colleagues. For obvious reasons, I shall not reveal my complete list. On a celebratory occasion like this, however, I trust it will not seem indiscreet for me to name John Jackson as one of my choices. I shall leave the more nuanced assessments of John's work to the experts. But from my nonspecialist's perspective, John …
Holmes' Failure, Louise Weinberg
Holmes' Failure, Louise Weinberg
Michigan Law Review
I have just set down the March 1997 Harvard Law Review, with its centennial celebration of Oliver Wendell Holmes' The Path of the Law. The Path of the Law is a grand thing, in my view Holmes' best thing. But just the same, I find myself surprised that on this occasion none of its celebrants raised what has always seemed to me a weakness of the piece, and of Holmes' much earlier book, The Common Law. This is a weakness that is at once a reflection and a forecast of the failure of its author. Writers today do seem to …

Bill Lockhart is truly an extraordinary man, not because his achievements have been so numerous and diverse - though they have - and not because his accomplishments carry a distinct mark of excellence and eminence - though they do. He is unusual because he is that combination of multiple gifts and powers rarely coalesced in a single human being. And we have spoken merely of the professional man; only those familiar with Bill's deep devotion to his family and heroic dedication to his church can fully comprehend how remarkable a person he is.

Jefferson B. Fordham: His Contribution To Local Government Law, Terrance Sandalow
Articles
The study of local government has not, by and large, attracted and held the interest of the ablest minds in the legal profession. Much of the same has been true within economics and political science, the social sciences from which lawyers might have anticipated most assistance in designing legal institutions to cope with the problems of an urban nation. Lawyers who have come to the area during the past decade have not, in consequence, had the advantages of a strong intellectual tradition upon which to build in the effort to understand and to come to grips with current problems.
