At the wonderful memorial service for Craig Callen held at MSU shortly after his death in April, I had the honor, by reason of proximity, to appear in effect as the representative of nationwide, and even worldwide, community of scholars that has felt his death very deeply. I am grateful for the opportunity to perform this same function in print.

Introducing The Recorder's Women Leaders In The Law, Scott Graham
Introducing The Recorder's Women Leaders In The Law, Scott Graham
Articles About Faculty
Today, The Recorder is honoring 20 women for helping blaze the trail in the profession decades ago. These living legends are firsts and founders — the first women partners at big law firms, the first (or second) women judges on their courts. Not surprisingly for women who were educated during the civil rights struggle and the Vietnam War, several have founded/and or piloted influential public interest organizations like Equal Rights Advocates, California Women Lawyers and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in the Bay Area.

Professor Bernard L. Segal, one of the world's great trial lawyers from the old school of silver-tongued orators, and a much beloved law professor, passed away Aug. 12. Bernie, as he was known by everyone he ever met, was my teacher, mentor, colleague and friend for nearly four decades. Although he faced increasingly difficult health problems in recent years, his death was unexpected, and I didn't get to see him before the end. I'm writing this because I didn't have the chance to say goodbye.

Recorder Recognizes 20 Women Leaders In Law, Scott Graham
Articles About Faculty
The Recorder lists 20 Women Leaders in Law, 2011. For purposes of this list, The Recorder limited eligibility to women in the Bay Area who have been attorneys for at least 35 years, and whose focus has been on practicing, teaching or adjudicating law. We acknowledge the trailblazing contributions of many, many others who became lawyers more recently, or whose impact has been primarily in the political arena.

The past several decades have seen a renaissance in criminal procedure as a cutting edge discipline, and as one inseparably linked to substantive criminal law. The renaissance can be traced in no small part to the work of a single scholar: William Stuntz. This essay is the introductory chapter to The Political Heart of Criminal Procedure: Essays on Themes of William J. Stuntz (forthcoming, Cambridge University Press, 2012), which brings together twelve leading American criminal justice scholars whose own writings have been profoundly influenced by Stuntz and his work. After briefly chronicling the arc of Stuntz’s career, the essay provides …

Justice Hugo Black And His Law Clerks: Match-Making And Match Point, Todd C. Peppers
Scholarly Articles
Like other Justices on the Supreme Court, Justice Black hired law clerks to assist with the work of the Court. Each year, his law clerks would assist in reviewing cert. petitions, doing legal research, and editing opinion drafts. These job duties, however, were only one dimension of the Black clerkship. As the Justice himself once remarked to a law-clerk applicant, “I don’t pick my law clerks for what they can do for me, I pick my law clerks for what I can do for them.”

Few Americans today know who Ferdinand Pecora was, although he was once a media superstar, a nearly daily fixture in newspapers and radio broadcasts across the country. With the onset of our current economic woes his name has slowly begun to crop up again. In April 2009, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a new "Pecora Commission" to investigate "what happened on Wall Street." The next week, the Senate invoked Pecora's name in voting to create an independent committee to investigate the financial crisis, and in January 2010 the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission held its first hearings.
