This Indian law symposium issue of the Washington Law Review was inspired by the work of Professor Ralph W. Johnson, whose teaching and personal commitment to the field have motivated hundreds, if not thousands, of law students. The decision of the Editorial Board to dedicate the symposium to him might have been made by as many as thirty classes that have passed through the University of Washington School of Law. Those students have been introduced to and moved by Professor Johnson's elucidation of a field that is at once intellectually challenging and morally significant. We recall a summer of contentment when American law was suffused with optimism, a season ending a long winter of despair and disorder. For the first fifteen years of this century, many (and perhaps most) American lawyers were filled with confidence that America had healed the wounds of civil war and was healing those of class struggle. We could, and we would, overcome all obstacles to peace and prosperity, not only for our people but for all mankind. This, it was widely believed, would be our century. Bloomington Law School Dean Alfred C. Aman Jr. met with four of IU 's international alumni clubs - Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan - during a trip to Asia last fall. Members of the IU Alumni Club of Japan include Hiroshi Watanabe, president of the club, to the right of Aman, and Kaoru Ando, BS'36, LLD'80, founder of the club, to his left. Ando is a 1977 recipient of IU's top alumni award, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

Gandhi: The Spirituality And Politics Of Suffering, Charles R. Disalvo

This Article examines the 1982 film Gandhi. Although it took factual liberties with Gandhi's life, Professor DiSalvo concludes that it accurately conveyed Gandhi's dedication to self-suffering and philosophy of non-violence. The Article analyzes excerpts from the film which illustrate Gandhi's five fundamental beliefs on the spirituality and politics of suffering. Those beliefs are in suffering as a weapon, as empowerment, as self-interest, as propaganda, and as reconciliation. The film Gandhi also masterfully introduced millions to Gandhi's life, message, and legacy.

The Courtroom As Classroom: Independence, Imagination And Ideology In The Work Of Jack Weinstein, Stephen B. Burbank

This Article explores influences that have shaped Judge Weinstein's judicial behavior. The author argues that Weinstein's conception of the judicial role has been influenced in significant respects by his career as a law professor. Tracing continuities and discontinuities between the roles of a professor and a trial judge, the author concludes that Judge Weinstein manifests both the desire for intellectual autonomy and the consequent lack of regard for institutional accountability that are characteristic of the former role. The Article then seeks to evaluate the judge-centered approach to judicial independence it imputes to Judge Weinstein. The author contends that the desire …

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was born on May 12, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up to become one of baseball's all-time greats. Yogi played nineteen years in the Major Leagues, eighteen with the New York Yankees and one with the New York Mets He has been called the greatest Yankee catcher ever. During his career, Yogi played in a record fourteen World Series and was elected the American League's Most Valuable Player three times. Following his playing career, Yogi managed both the Yankees and the New York Mets, and coached the Yankees, Mets, and Houston Astros. He received …

When the head coach of the University of Michigan baseball team resigned suddenly, University officials started looking around for a replacement. Then several people told the Athletic Director about an outstanding candidate in his own backyard. It turned out that a young man who had coached baseball both at Ohio Wesleyan University and Allegheny College and then been a catcher for several major league baseball clubs (before his throwing arm went dead) was a student in the Law School. In this issue dedicated to Professor Riesenfeld, his achievements as a scholar and teacher will appropriately receive central attention. As a contributor who also worked with him in his Washington days, I would like first to recall a few anecdotes from that time (which I hope he remembers as fondly as I do) and then turn to an assessment of his contributions to the literature on the interface between the constitutional and international law of treaties.
