In this oral history, Professor Bridgeman discuses what it was like to grow up in Laramie, WY, her experience as a woman of color in the legal career field, and her accomplishments as a lawyer, law professor, and magistrate. Professor Bridgeman touches on stories from when President Obama was her professor at University of Chicago Law School, insights into current events in the Wyoming Legislature, and her perspective on diversity recruitment.

In summer 2020, eighteen incoming law students (0Ls) were chosen as IU Maurer School of Law Bicentennial Research Scholars to work with Dean Austen Parrish and Libby Steinbach (Executive Assistant in the Dean's Office) over a two-month period in June and July 2020. The scholars were asked to interview a range of alumni who volunteered to be interviewed and who have played an important role in the life of law school. Scholars were tasked with writing an alumni profile for each alumnus interviewed. This report is the result of those efforts and a compilation of the alumni profiles.

Lowell E. Baier, President, Baier Properties Inc., JD 1964

A native of Jasper County, Indiana, Lowell Baier received his B.A. in economics and political science from Valparaiso University in 1961 and his law degree from Indiana University in 1964. While practicing law in Washington, D.C., in 1967, he formed Baier Properties Inc., a Bethesda, Md., based developer of warehouses, residential properties and award-winning office buildings and shopping centers.

In addition to his work as a lawyer and businessman, Baier has been a tireless advocate for natural resources and wildlife conservation. In the early 1970s, he was one of 14 founders …

An Indianapolis native, Maurer graduated from North Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Colorado. He returned home for law school, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University, where he was a writer and an editor of the Law Journal. A Question, Tamar Althouse

Tamar Althouse, later to be Tamar Scholz, was the first female student to be enrolled at the Indiana University School of Law, graduating with her LL.B. in 1892. In November of that year she wrote this article (“A Question”) for the student newspaper of the day, The Indiana Student, addressing the importance of educating women.
