Introducing The Recorder's Women Leaders In The Law, Scott Graham
Introducing The Recorder's Women Leaders In The Law, Scott Graham
Articles About Faculty
Today, The Recorder is honoring 20 women for helping blaze the trail in the profession decades ago. These living legends are firsts and founders — the first women partners at big law firms, the first (or second) women judges on their courts. Not surprisingly for women who were educated during the civil rights struggle and the Vietnam War, several have founded/and or piloted influential public interest organizations like Equal Rights Advocates, California Women Lawyers and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in the Bay Area.

Professor Bernard L. Segal, one of the world's great trial lawyers from the old school of silver-tongued orators, and a much beloved law professor, passed away Aug. 12. Bernie, as he was known by everyone he ever met, was my teacher, mentor, colleague and friend for nearly four decades. Although he faced increasingly difficult health problems in recent years, his death was unexpected, and I didn't get to see him before the end. I'm writing this because I didn't have the chance to say goodbye.

Articles About Faculty
The Recorder lists 20 Women Leaders in Law, 2011. For purposes of this list, The Recorder limited eligibility to women in the Bay Area who have been attorneys for at least 35 years, and whose focus has been on practicing, teaching or adjudicating law. We acknowledge the trailblazing contributions of many, many others who became lawyers more recently, or whose impact has been primarily in the political arena.

Essays in honor of great living men and women by way of a contribution acknowledging some of their core achievements as they make their exeat into other engagements in life, occasionally face some dangers. One of them is that a contributor like us may be tempted to write too much about the honoree. The other danger is that indeed, too little may be written about the Eminent Scholar, Distinguished Educator, World-renowned Law-Maker and Jurist, A Veritable learned Judge, Diplomat and Statesman that may defeat the purpose of such contribution. It is highly unlikely that our essay in honor of Professor …

Michael R. Kain: The Mayor Of Dupont Circle, Drucilla S. Ramey
Publications
In many ways Michael R. Kain represents the quintessential Golden Gate Law success story. By dint of a unique, yet peculiarly Golden Gateian constellation of qualities, he has become at once a leading real estate macher and a champion of iconic neighborhood preservation in a tough company town - Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. These qualities include instinctive business acumen, rock-hard determination, smarts, love of adventure, and perhaps most important, a gift for forming and enriching relationships with people from widely different walks of life. He might also add that a little bit of luck never hurts.
