Law Enforcement And Community Relations With Their Public, Garrett Fleming
Law Enforcement And Community Relations With Their Public, Garrett Fleming
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The Community Policing Model, despite being one of the most revered strategies used by police departments to interact with the general public, has presented several significant problems that trouble today's police officers. Its effectiveness toward improving the police-community relationship has come into question, justifying further research. However, this analysis must be completed in a multitude of geographical areas to show whether or not community policing is effective for the various demographics in those specific areas. This paper explores the effectiveness of the Community Policing Model as it is implemented by police departments in Northeast Ohio. An in-depth analysis on the …
Beliefs About Police Error Leading To Wrongful Convictions And Attitudes On Police Legitimacy, Julia Melfi
Beliefs About Police Error Leading To Wrongful Convictions And Attitudes On Police Legitimacy, Julia Melfi
Criminal Justice
This study investigates the relations between citizens’ perceptions of how police misconduct as a factor contributing to wrongful convictions is connected to attitudes towards police legitimacy. I hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between the two variables such that the more individuals believe police error contributes to wrongful convictions, the less legitimate they perceive the police to be. I also examined how citizens’ race affects these perceptions and attitudes, too, and hypothesized that Black citizens are more likely than White citizens to believe police error leads to wrongful conviction and mistrust the police. To test the hypotheses data …
Examining Student Perceptions: Ethics And Misconduct In Today's Police Department, William Andrew Davis
Examining Student Perceptions: Ethics And Misconduct In Today's Police Department, William Andrew Davis
Master's Theses
Police ethics and decision making are issues of concern to both academic scholars and police leaders. While previous studies have focused on perceptions of police officers, little research has focused on the perceptions of young people about police ethical decision-making. This study aims to capture such perceptions from a cohort of college students majoring in criminal justice. Students from an undergraduate criminal justice program (n=263) were surveyed to determine their attitudes toward various ethical components of police work, including the prevalence of misconduct and the impact of a college education on ethical decision-making. Moreover, the effect of successful completion of …

Cops, Cameras And Accountability: User-Generated Online Video And Public Space Police-Civilian Interactions, Douglas Alan Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Video captured by increasingly ubiquitous civilian cameras and communicated to a mass audience over the Internet is capable of bypassing police jurisdictional influence over traditional mass media and may be affecting police-civilian interactions in American public space as the initial cusp of a paradigm shift. Historically, the ability to visually record activities in public space was reserved to those with the resources and the motivation to devote to the task. Police and traditional mass media wielded power through cameras, power often not available to the public. Today, police often find their cameras outnumbered by those under autonomous citizen control. An …

Disciplinary Patterns And Complaint System Of The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Scott Eric Hutter
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis will analyze the disciplinary patterns and the complaint system of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD). It reveals if there is significance when multiple officers engage in improper acts as opposed to when a single officer engages in the same acts. The study will identify the most common types of accusations filed against sworn personnel, what ranks are most commonly involved (i.e. deputy, sergeant, etc.), and what assignments (i.e. patrol) incur the most investigations.
Sexual Boundary Violations Between Peace Officer Agencies And Offenders, Jacqueline Lorraine Goins
Sexual Boundary Violations Between Peace Officer Agencies And Offenders, Jacqueline Lorraine Goins
Theses Digitization Project
Peace officers across this country have allowed a hostile environment to be created with offenders who are in their custody. An overview of the issues to be addressed in this study will begin with sexual boundary violations among peace officers and offenders, such as physical intimacy and emotional commitment that meets the sexual needs of the peace officer.
