When Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump to become president of the United States in 2020, many observers hoped that Biden would reset the troubled US-China trade relationship. The Trump administration had abandoned the rules-based approach to international trade of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and adopted a power-based approach instead. Using a power-based approach, the United States imposed or threatened sanctions if China did not dismantle its state-led economy and terminate the use of industrial subsidies to support its domestic industries. The consensus indefinite extension of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1995 and the more recent conclusion of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. which was supported by all five of the world's declared nuclear weapons states, allow for unprecedented optimism by nonproliferation experts regarding nuclear weapons proliferation curtailment and weapons reduction. These recent inroads into the accomplishment of NPT goals raise new questions. however. regarding the underlying commitment level of nuclear powers. China's proliferation record, in particular. is marred with inconsistencies, but its current economic growth and increasingly nonisolationist policies may cause China to reconsider its past noncompliance with the …

The debacle of the Nationalist regime in China and the subsequent United States trade embargo on the People's Republic of China (China) from 1949 to 1970, resulted in the deletion or obsolescence of United States federal income tax incentives previously applicable to Sino-American trade. The benefits of these tax provisions were transferred, with the Nationalist government, to the Taiwan-based Republic of China (Taiwan). Moreover, foreign trade tax measures enacted during the economic stalemate were largely inapplicable to China, but enhanced existing trade with Taiwan and Hong Kong.
