The purpose of this research is to argue that U.S. immigration policy, specifically the 1996 IIRIRA (also known as IIRAIRA), needs to change regarding the legal treatment of immigrant U.S. military veteran deportees due to the following concepts. Background: While prenatal care is an essential preventive service, access is not equal. Undocumented immigrants in the United States face many barriers that prevent them from accessing primary health care needs, including adequate prenatal care. Throughout the United States, standard Medicaid provides coverage for all pregnancy-related care, encompassing the antenatal period, childbirth, and postpartum. However, undocumented women do not qualify to receive these services. Many studies showed that lack of prenatal care for undocumented pregnant women jeopardizes their health and their neonates’ health by increasing their risk of complications related to pregnancy and birth. In 2019, only 3% of refugees had access to higher education. Using qualitative research methods of surveys and semi-structured interviews, this study explores the perspectives of two student affairs professionals and six individuals with formal refugee status granted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and in possession of a refugee travel document, who have not yet been resettled and are pursuing higher education in the United States. From 1945 to 1979, the Immigration and Naturalization Service was responsible for identifying and prosecuting Nazi collaborators and potential war criminals in the United States. It failed in this task for a number of reasons. The first of these was that the agency was severely disorganized and mismanaged. Reliance on interagency cooperation, lack of manpower and resources, and lack of institutional support for “Nazi hunters” posed further problems. Morale crises among employees and the legal difficulties of actually prosecuting Nazi collaborators also hampered the agency’s effectiveness. This migration is different from asylum/refugee status or other forms of protected relief. The people who are migrating are not facing imminent threats of political violence or other types of violence, but are living in conditions of poverty. Their livelihoods depend on migration, and money earned in the United States that is sent back to their communities.

This thesis explores the political context of Chile’s current immigration laws and policies, tracing changes through the dictatorship of the late 20th century, the transition to democracy in 1991, and up through the current administration. Using the backdrop of the Venezuelan migrant crisis, focus is given to specific stipulations of current policies and the impact they have on arriving migrants. A comparison with neighboring Argentina highlights key differences in policy reactions and is used to argue that a new constitution is needed in Chile in order to effectively respond to the arrival of over 250,000 Venezuelan migrants. From 2017 to 2020, the Trump administration cut United States refugee admissions tenfold. These reforms come unprecedented to the 40-year-old resettlement program (USRAP). By critically reviewing literature on this topic as well as conducting eight original interviews with five national nonprofits contracted by the Department of State to do refugee resettlement casework, this study sought to identify the implications of the Trump administration’s reforms to the program. The impetus for this paper began with the following question: where once Daura’s identity had been firmly grounded in his Catalonian origins and within the milieu of international artists in France, did this period of change in his artistic output originate from a grave insecurity in nationality? By examining U.S. immigration policies and Daura’s identity as a refugee, immigrant, and naturalized American citizen, I will establish that a crisis of nationality, complicated by Nation of Origin Quotas and nativist immigration policies, influenced the art of Pierre Daura and coincided with a striking transformation of his style.
