Following the introduction, Part I of this article will outline threats to biodiversity within Brazil's borders. Because this is a topic that has already been explored extensively, this article makes no attempt to cover that ground exhaustively. Instead, Part I will attempt to highlight the variety and extent of Brazilian ecosystems and the biodiversity within them. Part I will also discuss current and emerging threats to biodiversity in Brazil, and above all, threats that have become even more real since the United Nation's celebrated "Earth Summit," held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This Article proposes a new international regime to help recapture the lost value of native forests and promote global forest protection - the General Agreement on the Timber Trade.
Part I outlines the essential differences between native forest conservation and industrial forestry. Part II chronicles the ecological, social, and economic losses resulting from the destruction of native forests. Part Ill reveals the national and international components of the timber trade, and demonstrates how these components contribute to unsustainable logging practices. Russia's Wild East: Ecological Deterioration And The Rule Of Law In Siberia, Paul Stanton Kibel

Although there are now greater environmental protections on the Russian law books, these protections have so far done little to improve ecological conditions in Siberia. This article examines how the dramatic political and legal changes in Russia have affected Siberian nature conservation and environmental protection. More specifically, it seeks to explain why, despite the significant restructuring of political power and the increasingly open discussion of ecological issues, the Siberian environment continues to deteriorate.
