The “Renewable Fuel Standard” was the first renewable fuel mandate set forth by the United States Environmental Protection Agency initially under the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005. Alternative fuels are defined by the US EPA as alternatives to conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel. Alternative fuels are lauded for their “clean energy” attributes and also because they can be resourced domestically, allowing for per-capita reductions in greenhouse gas emissions with less dependency on foreign energy resources.
