A Life Worth Living: Fighting Filicide Against Children With Disabilities

This article aims to explore filicide as it relates to children with disabilities. Filicide is a specific type of killing where a parent murders his or her own child. Part II gives a historical perspective on filicide. Part II also explains the various reasons behind filicide and why those reasons specifically apply to the killings of children with disabilities. Further, Part III explores the relationship between sentencing disparities in cases where society sympathizes with the parents of children with disabilities and condemns parents of nondisabled children. Automated vehicles present tremendous possibilities for people with disabilities. They also have the potential to open new legal challenges for antidiscrimination law, tort liability, and privacy considerations. The initial discussions of these vehicles have pointed out their potential significance for people with disabilities, while largely ignoring what they might mean for disability law. This Article sets out first steps on the inviting road ahead for people with disabilities as users of automated means of transport.

Rusi Stanev, survivor of an intransigent system of guardianship and institutionalisation, victor in a ground breaking disability rights case against Bulgaria at the European Court of Human Rights, my partner in this writing project and (for too short a time) my friend, died on March 9, 2017, before our chapter could be completed. He was 61. Questions have been raised about the appropriateness of the care Rusi received in his final days; at the time of finalising this chapter, a formal inquest into the circumstances of his death had not issued in a decision.
