What Can Be Done About Stock Market Volatility, Tamar Frankel

Volatility is as old as the financial markets. The bull market of 1986 and the crash that followed in 1987 were but the latest of periodic market gyrations that started with the South Sea Bubble and the Lombard Street run on commercial paper and have continued ever since.' Volatility in the financial markets would not be very important if market activity simply mirrored economic activity. Volatility would be much less important if the markets moved independently of the economy. But if we believe, as I do, that the markets and the economy are interdependent, and that their volatility is generally …

While the United States’ common law system is characterized by diversity due to each state having its own set of rules, in certain areas there are nationwide legislative attempts of unification and standardization. One such attempt is the adoption of the Uniform Commercial Code which governs the sale of goods law in the United States. The French civil law system generally differs greatly from the American system in that it is primarily based upon statutes and codes. However, the American Uniform Commercial Code and the French Civil Code provide tangible, comparable bases to assess similarities and differences between American and …

Revitalizing The Consumer Product Safety Commission, Carl W. Tobias

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), having recently celebrated its sixteenth birthday, no longer can claim to be a young agency. On October 27, 1972, Congress created the Commission to protect individuals from deaths and injuries caused by dangerous or defective consumer products. Yet the CPSC, as it approaches maturity, has failed to fulfill numerous purposes for which Congress established it.
