There is today much interest in research of neuronal substrata in metaphor processing. It has been suggested that the right hemisphere yields a key role in the comprehension of figurative language (non-literal) and, particularly, in metaphors. Figurative language is included in pragmatics, a branch of linguistics that researches the use of language, in opposition to the study of the system of language. There lingers, though, an open debate in respect to the identification of the specific aspects concerning semantics, as opposed to those dominated by pragmatics. Phenomenally popular fin-de-siecle celebrity Marie Carelli, in her fictional and nonfictional writing, repeatedly affirmed that the era's iconic New Woman represented not the promise but the threat of "modernity." Modernity, as represented by the New Woman, did not extend the civilizing process. Rather, it jeopardized it. By challenging rules of behavior that were integral to the civilized state, the New Woman threatened a return to a previous state of barbarianism. Indeed, by refusing to allow a proper feeling of womanly shame to regulate her thoughts and actions, this icon of modernity seemed to counter Norbert Elias's understanding of the symbiotic …

A few months before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Mexican poet Octavio Paz was proclaimed at a crossroads uppercase: praising the modernity as a blessing or regret it as a curse. This dilemma was paradoxical that peace in both professed an almost mystical commitment by the modernity: that is a destination: if Mexico wants to be, will be modern, stated (Peace, 2003: 57). A correct pronunciation is of paramount importance to guarantee the intelligibility of students of Spanish as a Foreign Language; however, paradoxically, the teaching of pronunciation is one of the least taught sub-skills in SFL manuals. Habitualmente y en un sentido amplio, se ha convenido en remontar sus raíces a las voces griegas ού (no) y τόπος (lugar), esto es, el lugar que no existe.
