In this article I first examine the ways in which the dual terms of structure and agency are used in sociological theories. Then, relying on Lacan’s notions of split‐subject, the formula of sexuation, and forms of discourses, and Laclau’s theory of ideological hegemony, I argue that agency in most current sociological formulations is but a posited other of the structure that dissolves if examined closely; it is similar to the Lacanian fantasmic object. This report addresses income adequacy for Wisconsin’s older adults using the WOW-GI Elder Economic Security Standard Index (the Index) methodology. The Index benchmarks basic costs of living for elder households and illustrates how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households, including household size, home ownership or renter status, and health status. The costs are based on market costs for basic needs of elder households and do not assume any public or private supports.

A Study Of Flexicurity Strategy In Netherlands And Denmark: The Institutional Life-Course Policy Approach, Chih-Lung Huang

The flexicurity strategy in Netherlands and Denmark, i.e. flexible labour market and the reinforcement of social security institutions, successfully kept the unemployment rate from rising in the 1990s and has drawn attention from social policy scholars. Under the development of flexible labour market and destabilized employment pattern, the agenda of flexicurity strategy has been shifted to strengthen and facilitate the transitions in social security institutions. Drawing on institutional analysis on redistribution of time and income, this paper explores outcomes and development from recent flexicurity reforms. A Response To The "Conservative Case" For Same-Sex Marriage: Same-Sex Marriage And "The Tragedy Of The Commons", Lynn D. Wardle

After initially reporting on the status of the movement for same-sex marriage in the United States and around the world, this article reviews the five key claims of the "conservative case" for same-sex marriage ("we exist," stabilization, sexual taming, social gains, and no harm) and compares them to the seven core principles of conservatism (preservation, institutions, caution, experience, distrust, individualism, and morality). It finds that the claims for same-sex marriage are seriously deficient when measured against those conservative principles. Engines Of Inequality: Class, Race, And Family Structure, Amy L. Wax

The past 30 years have witnessed a dramatic divergence in family structure by social class, income, education, and race. This article reviews the data on these trends, explores their significance, and assesses social scientists’ recent attempts to explain them. The article concludes that society-wide changes in economic conditions or social expectations cannot account for these patterns. Rather, for reasons that are poorly understood, cultural disparities have emerged by class and race in attitudes and behaviors surrounding family, sexuality, and reproduction. These disparities will likely fuel social and economic inequality and contribute to disparities in children’s life prospects for decades to …
