Analysis Of Novel Corrosion Resistant Maraging Steels For Use In Additive Manufacturing, Bradley Michael Samuel, James Knowlton Smith Jun 2022

Analysis Of Novel Corrosion Resistant Maraging Steels For Use In Additive Manufacturing, Bradley Michael Samuel, James Knowlton Smith

Materials Engineering

Stainless maraging steel has been proven to be an industry standard material for plastic injection molds. Its high hardness and corrosion resistance extend the lifetime of the tool. This alloy system is also well-suited to additive manufacturing, which can be utilized to form internal cooling channels, further increasing tool life. Using Rapid Alloy Development (RAD) Oerilkon METCO is developing a new composition of stainless maraging tool steel that has high hardness/strength, is corrosion resistant, and has additive-capable melting and solidification properties. This study tests the hardness and corrosion resistance of the new RAD alloys against the current market competitor Corrax …

Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz Jun 2019

Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz

Materials Engineering

A newly developed copper-based alloy, P98-X1 was tested for compressive strength to predict qualitative performance compared to MF53, F-Bronze, CuNiSn, and CuMnNi for use as the infiltration alloy in metal matrix composite (MMC) drill bits. Ingots of each alloy were cast using an arc furnace and cut into compression testing samples using wire electrical discharge machining (EDM). The alloys were selected for testing based on solid solution strengthening coefficient and melting point. Five of each alloy were compression tested to determine yield strength of the infiltration alloy. Yield strength was determined using a 0.002mm displacement offset from the linear elastic …

Electrochemical Characterization Of Precious Metal Braze Alloys Using Potentiodynamic Polarization, Maxwell Glen Martin, Mason Gregory Morgan, Matthew David Vance Jun 2014

Electrochemical Characterization Of Precious Metal Braze Alloys Using Potentiodynamic Polarization, Maxwell Glen Martin, Mason Gregory Morgan, Matthew David Vance

Materials Engineering

This study aimed to characterize the electrochemical behavior of six precious metal braze alloys by performing potentiodynamic polarization tests (ParStat 2273) based on ASTM Specifications G5 and G59. To determine the extent to which the alloys will contribute to galvanic corrosion in a marine environment (3.5 wt% NaCl), corrosion analysis software was used to produce fitted Tafel lines to determine the open circuit potential, Voc, for each alloy. The Voc values for the alloys were found to be -66.58 mV for Gold ABA, 13.01 mV for Nicoro®, -39.00 mV for Nioro®, 23.4 mV …

Evaluation Of High Phosphorus Electroless Nickel Platings To Protect Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers In Seawater Service, Nathan Brink Jun 2013

Evaluation Of High Phosphorus Electroless Nickel Platings To Protect Carbon Steel Heat Exchangers In Seawater Service, Nathan Brink

Materials Engineering

The purpose of this project was to determine the suitability of using a high phosphorus electroless nickel (HPEN) coating to prevent corrosion in carbon steel heat exchangers in seawater service. 1 in. x 4 in. samples were cut from ¼ in. SA-516-70 pressure vessel plate, pickled to remove mill scale, dressed with 300 grit sand paper and sent out for plating with 2 mils of HPEN. Due to a clerical error during plating, samples were plated to a significantly lesser extent than requested. Samples were plated with approximately 0.6 mils of HPEN versus the 2 mils requested, however this was …
