Green Scheduling For Radiant Systems In Buildings, Truong X. Nghiem, Madhur Behl, George J. Pappas, Rahul Mangharam Oct 2012

Green Scheduling For Radiant Systems In Buildings, Truong X. Nghiem, Madhur Behl, George J. Pappas, Rahul Mangharam

Madhur Behl

In this report we look at the problem of peak power reduction for buildings with electric radiant floor heating systems. Uncoordinated operation of a multi-zone radiant floor heating system can result in temporally correlated electricity demand surges or peaks in the building’s electricity consumption. As peak power prices are 200-400 times that of the nominal rate, this uncoordinated activity can result in high electricity costs and expensive system operation. We have previously presented green scheduling as an approach for reducing the aggregate peak power consumption in buildings while ensuring that indoor thermal comfort is always maintained. This report extends the …

Investigation Of Thermomechanical Effects Of Lighting Conditions On Canvas Paintings By Laser Shearography, Morteza Khaleghi, Ivo Dobrev, Philip Klausmeyer, Ellery Harrington, Cosme Furlong Jul 2012

Investigation Of Thermomechanical Effects Of Lighting Conditions On Canvas Paintings By Laser Shearography, Morteza Khaleghi, Ivo Dobrev, Philip Klausmeyer, Ellery Harrington, Cosme Furlong

Morteza Khaleghi

Quantitative techniques to characterize thermomechanical effects of light on canvas paintings are necessary in order to better understand the deleterious effects that light has on precious art collections in museum exhibitions. In this paper, we present advances in the development of a customized laser shearography system for temporal characterization of in-plane displacements of canvas paintings when subjected to specific lighting conditions. The shearography system is synchronized with a thermal IR camera and concomitant measurements of derivatives of displacements along two orthogonal shearing directions as well as thermal fields are performed. Due to the nature of the measurements, we have developed …

Salmon Fibrin Supports An Increased Number Of Sprouts And Decreased Degradation While Maintaining Sprout Length Relative To Human Fibrin In An In Vitro Angiogenesis Model, Alisha Sarang-Sieminski, Keith Gooch Apr 2012

Salmon Fibrin Supports An Increased Number Of Sprouts And Decreased Degradation While Maintaining Sprout Length Relative To Human Fibrin In An In Vitro Angiogenesis Model, Alisha Sarang-Sieminski, Keith Gooch

Alisha L. Sarang-Sieminski

Salmon-derived fibrin has been proposed as a preferred alternative to human or bovine fibrin because of its reduced potential for disease transmission. Here we evaluate salmon fibrin as an alternative ECM support for therapeutic angiogenesis applications, such as vascularizing engineered tissues. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) seeded on gelatin beads and suspended in either salmon or human fibrin sprouted and formed capillary-like structures. Sprout length was generally increased with the addition of bFGF and VEGF and further increased with the addition of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). The number of sprouts per bead was increased 61-188% in salmon fibrin relative …

Experimental Verification Of The Linear Relationship Between Stress And The Reciprocal Of The Peak Barkhausen Voltage In Astm A36 Steel, Orfeas Kypris, Ikenna Nlebedim, David Jiles Jan 2012

Experimental Verification Of The Linear Relationship Between Stress And The Reciprocal Of The Peak Barkhausen Voltage In Astm A36 Steel, Orfeas Kypris, Ikenna Nlebedim, David Jiles

Orfeas Kypris

This study presents an experimental validation of a model theory for determining the relationship between a nondestructive measurement parameter and a property of interest. It was found that the reciprocal of the peak envelope amplitude of the Barkhausen emission voltage follows a linear relationship with stress. A linear relationship between stress and the reciprocal of the root mean square voltage was also obtained. These observations represent an important step towards improving the use of Barkhausen signals for magnetic non-destructive evaluation of stress as a function of depth in ferromagnetic load bearing structures.

Conceptual Design For Treatment Of Mining And Metallurgical Wastewaters Which Contains Arsenic And Antimony, Zeljko J. Kamberovic Jan 2012

Conceptual Design For Treatment Of Mining And Metallurgical Wastewaters Which Contains Arsenic And Antimony, Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

This paper presents a preliminary design for treatment of mining and metallurgical wastewaters (MMW) from the basin of antimony “Zajača“, which contains high concentrations of arsenic and antimony. MMW have been investigated in laboratory, due to large difference in concentrations of pollutants. Metallurgical wastewaters were treated using iron (II)-sulfate and lime milk used to adjust the pH value at 7. After chemical treatment of metallurgical wastewater and its joining with mining wastewater, residual amount of arsenic in water was below maximum allowed concentrations, while the concentration of antimony, remained above the maximum allowed value. The final phase of purification process …

Pyrite. History, Chemistry, And Metallurgy, Fathi Habashi Jan 2012

Pyrite. History, Chemistry, And Metallurgy, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The Book covers the history of pyrite - - how it was a strategic mineral necessary for the production of elemental sulfur needed for making gunpowder for military purposes and for the production of SO2 needed for making sulfuric acid for the chemical industry. Now its presence is a nuisance in tailings ponds. The book also covers the processing of pyrite containing gold, its chemistry and technology, the processing of pyrite cinder for the production of a variety of metals, and its behaviour towards autotrophic microorganisms.

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Dec 2011

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

Oxy-reforming is emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional methods of hydrogen generation. The current article characterises this process through analysis of individual reactions: SMR (steam methane reforming), WGS (water gas shift) and CPO (catalytic partial oxidation). Analyses relate to optimisation of thermal conditions thus enabling cost-effectivenes of the process.
