Deep-Learning-Based Classification Of Digitally Modulated Signals Using Capsule Networks And Cyclic Cumulants, John A. Snoap, Dimitrie C. Popescu, James A. Latshaw, Chad M. Spooner

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a novel deep-learning (DL)-based approach for classifying digitally modulated signals, which involves the use of capsule networks (CAPs) together with the cyclic cumulant (CC) features of the signals. These were blindly estimated using cyclostationary signal processing (CSP) and were then input into the CAP for training and classification. The classification performance and the generalization abilities of the proposed approach were tested using two distinct datasets that contained the same types of digitally modulated signals, but had distinct generation parameters. The results showed that the classification of digitally modulated signals using CAPs and CCs proposed in the paper …

Traffic classification is a crucial aspect for Software-Defined Networking functionalities. This paper is a part of an on-going project aiming at optimizing power consumption in the environment of software-defined datacenter networks. We have developed a novel routing strategy that can blindly balance between the power consumption and the quality of service for the incoming traffic flows. In this paper, we demonstrate how to classify the network traffic flows so that the quality of service of each flow-class can be guaranteed efficiently. This is achieved by creating a dataset that encompasses different types of network traffic such as video, VoIP, game …

Review Of Data Mining Techniques For Detecting Churners In The Telecommunication Industry, Mahmoud Ewieda, Mohamed Ismail Roushdy, Essam Shaaban

Future Computing and Informatics Journal

The telecommunication sector has been developed rapidly and with large amounts of data obtained as a result of increasing in the number of subscribers, modern techniques, data-based applications, and services. As well as better awareness of customer requirements and excellent quality that meets their satisfaction. This satisfaction raises rivalry between firms to maintain the quality of their services and upgrade them. These data can be helpfully extracted for analysis and used for predicting churners. Researchers around the world have conducted important research to understand the uses of Data mining (DM) that can be used to predict customers' churn. This …

Machine Learning With Topological Data Analysis, Ephraim Robert Love May 2021

Machine Learning With Topological Data Analysis, Ephraim Robert Love

Doctoral Dissertations

Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a relatively new focus in the fields of statistics and machine learning. Methods of exploiting the geometry of data, such as clustering, have proven theoretically and empirically invaluable. TDA provides a general framework within which to study topological invariants (shapes) of data, which are more robust to noise and can recover information on higher dimensional features than immediately apparent in the data. A common tool for conducting TDA is persistence homology, which measures the significance of these invariants. Persistence homology has prominent realizations in methods of data visualization, statistics and machine learning. Extending ML with …

Real Vs Fake Faces: Deepfakes And Face Morphing, Jacob L. Dameron Jan 2021

Real Vs Fake Faces: Deepfakes And Face Morphing, Jacob L. Dameron

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The ability to determine the legitimacy of a person’s face in images and video can be important for many applications ranging from social media to border security. From a biometrics perspective, altering one’s appearance to look like a target identity is a direct method of attack against the security of facial recognition systems. Defending against such attacks requires the ability to recognize them as a separate identity from their target. Alternatively, a forensics perspective may view this as a forgery of digital media. Detecting such forgeries requires the ability to detect artifacts not commonly seen in genuine media. This work …

Non-Parametric Classification Of Time Series Using Permutation Ordinal Statistics, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela Oct 2018

Non-Parametric Classification Of Time Series Using Permutation Ordinal Statistics, Aldo Duarte Vera Tudela

LSU Master's Theses

The present thesis explores some approaches to classify time series without prior statistical information using the concept of permutation entropy. Motivated by the results from a previous published and relevant work that set similarity relationships between EEG time series, a reproduction of the proposed approach was performed giving negative results. The failure to reproduce those results led to the conclusion that the approach of building statistics from permutation patterns have to be complemented with another metric in order to be used for classification purposes. The concept of Total Variation Distance (TVD) was then used to develop three algorithms to classify …

Brain Connectivity Networks For The Study Of Nonlinear Dynamics And Phase Synchrony In Epilepsy, Hoda Rajaei Oct 2018

Brain Connectivity Networks For The Study Of Nonlinear Dynamics And Phase Synchrony In Epilepsy, Hoda Rajaei

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Assessing complex brain activity as a function of the type of epilepsy and in the context of the 3D source of seizure onset remains a critical and challenging endeavor. In this dissertation, we tried to extract the attributes of the epileptic brain by looking at the modular interactions from scalp electroencephalography (EEG). A classification algorithm is proposed for the connectivity-based separation of interictal epileptic EEG from normal. Connectivity patterns of interictal epileptic discharges were investigated in different types of epilepsy, and the relation between patterns and the epileptogenic zone are also explored in focal epilepsy.

A nonlinear recurrence-based method is …

Wavelet-Based Non-Homogeneous Hidden Markov Chain Model For Hyperspectral Signature Classification, Siwei Feng Mar 2015

Wavelet-Based Non-Homogeneous Hidden Markov Chain Model For Hyperspectral Signature Classification, Siwei Feng

Masters Theses

Hyperspectral signature classification is a kind of quantitative analysis approach for hyperspectral imagery which performs detection and classification of the constituent materials at pixel level in the scene. The classification procedure can be operated directly on hyperspectral data or performed by using some features extracted from corresponding hyperspectral signatures containing information like signature energy or shape. In this paper, we describe a technique that applies non-homogeneous hidden Markov chain (NHMC) models to hyperspectral signature classification. The basic idea is to use statistical models (NHMC models) to characterize wavelet coefficients which capture the spectrum structural information at multiple levels. Experimental results …

A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch Jan 2014

A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

While all mammals sleep, the functions and implications of sleep are not well understood, and are a strong area of investigation in the research community. Mice are utilized in many sleep studies, with electroencephalography (EEG) signals widely used for data acquisition and analysis. However, since EEG electrodes must be surgically implanted in the mice, the method is high cost and time intensive. This work presents an extension of a previously researched high throughput, low cost, non-invasive method for mouse behavior detection and classification. A novel hierarchical classifier is presented that classifies behavior states including NREM and REM sleep, as well …

Study Of Statistical And Computational Intelligence Methods Of Detecting Temporal Signature Of Forest Fire Heat Plume From Single-Band Ground-Based Infrared Video, Daniel G. Kohler Jun 2012

Study Of Statistical And Computational Intelligence Methods Of Detecting Temporal Signature Of Forest Fire Heat Plume From Single-Band Ground-Based Infrared Video, Daniel G. Kohler

Master's Theses

This thesis will analyze video from land-based, cooled mid-wave infrared cameras to identify temporal features indicative of a heat plume from a forest fire. Desirable features and methods will show an ability to distinguish between heat plume movement and other movements, such as foliage, vehicles, humans, and birds in flight. Features will be constructed primarily using combinations of statistics and principal component analysis (PCA) with intent to detect key characteristics of fire and heat plume: persistence and growth. Several classification systems will combine and filter the features in an attempt to classify pixels as either heat or non-heat. The classification …

Automated Detection Of Hematological Abnormalities Through Classification Of Flow Cytometric Data Patterns, Mark A. Rossman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flow Cytometry analyzers have become trusted companions due to their ability to perform fast and accurate analyses of human blood. The aim of these analyses is to determine the possible existence of abnormalities in the blood that have been correlated with serious disease states, such as infectious mononucleosis, leukemia, and various cancers. Though these analyzers provide important feedback, it is always desired to improve the accuracy of the results. This is evidenced by the occurrences of misclassifications reported by some users of these devices. It is advantageous to provide a pattern interpretation framework that is able to provide better classification …
