The chapter presents a comparison of results of modelling concentrations of fine dust (suspended dust PM10) in the air with the use of two diffusion models: the Gaussian plume model (used commonly in Poland), and the Gaussian puff model CALPUFF (used significantly less frequently). It indicates discrepancies in obtained results of calculations for point emitters taking into consideration three dimensional options (with the following heights: 20, 40 and 60 m and diameters of respectively: 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 m). For particular variants, errors were visualised, resulting from use of the simple Gaussian plume model in place of the advanced CALPUFF …

With the growing focus on renewable energy, there is increased interest in modeling and optimizing current energy capture (CEC) devices. The interaction of multiple wakes from CEC devices can affect optimal placement strategy, and issues of environmental impacts on sediment transport and large-scale flow should be examined. Numerical models of four flume-scale experiments were built using Sandia National Laboratories’ Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (SNL-EFDC.) Model predictions were calibrated against measured velocities to estimate flow and turbine parameters. The velocity deficit was sensitive to αmd, the dimensionless Smagorinsky constant related to horizontal momentum diffusion, as well as the k-ε turbulence parameters. …

This study reports the chemical modification of the Byrsonima Crassifolia biomass with citric acid to improve its sorption properties for the removal of cadmium and nickel ions from aqueous solutions under competitive sorption conditions (i.e., multicomponent solutions). The best operating conditions of the chemical modification process were identified using the signal-to-noise ratio to enhance the metal uptakes and to reduce the competitive sorption effects during the simultaneous removal of these metals using the modified biomass. Results indicated that both the sorption capacity and selectivity for heavy metal removal can be improved in multicomponent metal solutions. This improvement in sorption properties …

One of the measures allowing to reduce the emissions of pollutants into the air from the housing sector is decrease in the energy demand, which can be most easily achieved by thermal renovations. This paper analyses some possible variants of thermomodernization of a residential building typical for single-family housing construction of the 1970s and 1980s in Poland (replacement of window frames, insulation of external walls, flat roof insulation and all of the above-mentioned measures together with heating system replacement). Each of the considered variants was assessed in respect to the heat demand and emission of basic pollutants into the air. …

To guide the selection of gas phase filtration media in the air cleaning devices, it is important to understand and estimate the media performance under usage concentrations. Filters for improving indoor air quality are typically subject to low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentration levels (e.g., ∼50 ppb), while the current standard tests per ASHRAE 145.1 (ANSI/ASHRAE 2008). are performed at relatively high challenge concentrations (∼1–100 ppm level). The primary objective of this study was to determine if media that perform well at the high concentration test condition would also perform well under the low concentration. The secondary objective was to …

To guide the selection and design of air filter/cleaning devices for improving indoor air quality (IAQ), it is important to be able to assess the performance and characteristics of filtermedia within a reasonable/practical testing period for lowconcentration conditions (∼50 ppb) under which they are applied. Our study objectives were to investigate whether filter media showing good performance at high concentrations per ASHRAE Standard 145.1 (ASHRAE 2008) would also performwell at low concentrations, typically indoors, and to explore whether and how existing models for filtration media beds can be applied to predict and extrapolate the experimental performance results obtained under high …

Failed Cyberdefense: The Environmental Consequences Of Hostile Acts, Jan Kallberg, Rosemary A. Burk
Rosemary A. Burk
A failed cyberdefense can have wider effects than discussed in earlier debates of potential consequences of a cyberattack. The need for cyberdefense to protect the environment has not drawn the attention it deserves as a national security matter. Adversarial nations are covertly pursuing methods to damage and disrupt the United States in a cyberconflict in the future. The president of the United States noted this in Sustaining U.S. Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense: Both state and non-state actors possess the capability and intent to conduct cyberespionage and, potentially, cyberattacks on the United States, with possible severe effects on …
