Helium-Air Mixing In Simulated Reactor Cavities Of Very High Temperature Reactors, Abdullah Abubakar
Helium-Air Mixing In Simulated Reactor Cavities Of Very High Temperature Reactors, Abdullah Abubakar
Dissertations and Theses
Abstract
Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTRs) and High Temperature Gas Reactors (HTGRs) are Generation IV gas reactors that promise to deliver high temperature process heat and efficient electricity for both industrial and commercial purposes. They have a high level of inherent passive safety making them a viable alternative to traditional water-cooled reactors. These helium gas-cooled reactors use graphite containing U-235 TRISO fuel particles in their core, as a moderator to slow down neutrons for fission chain reactions and for general core support. In the event of a primary circuit pipe break, the coolant gas escapes into the surrounding reactor cavity …
Optical And Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospherically Processed Brown Carbon Using Novel First-Principle Instrumentation, Benjamin Sumlin
Optical And Physicochemical Properties Of Atmospherically Processed Brown Carbon Using Novel First-Principle Instrumentation, Benjamin Sumlin
McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Atmospheric processing of brown carbon (BrC) – a class of spherical, internally-mixed, light-absorbing organic aerosol – emitted from smoldering biomass combustion is an understudied phenomenon with implications for climate science, air quality models, and satellite retrieval algorithms. BrC aerosols have received significant attention as a strong contributor to atmospheric light absorption in the shorter visible wavelengths and a driver of UV photochemistry. Their complex refractive indices (m=n+ik), size distributions, and carbon oxidation states dictate their optical properties, atmospheric residence times, and chemical interactions, respectively. There is currently a gap in our understanding of these fundamental particle properties and their evolution …
An Experimental Investigation Of Alternative Wave Attenuation Mechanisms For A Modular Breakwater, Richard Perry
An Experimental Investigation Of Alternative Wave Attenuation Mechanisms For A Modular Breakwater, Richard Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global warming and sea level rise threaten to render traditional coastal protection structures as less effective. Floating breakwaters offer the advantages of adapting to rising sea level, allowing important material transport to occur, and being able to deploy and adapt to varying environmental conditions (seabed, depth, etc.). Traditional floating breakwaters typically consist of reflective concrete structures that are limited semi-sheltered locations. This research aimed to construct floating breakwaters out of lightweight materials with a smaller footprint while utilizing alternative attenuation mechanisms. Three breakwaters consisting of a box, beach, and pipe designs were constructed at 1:40 scale and tested in a …

Development of high-efficiency and cost-effective carbon capture technology is a central element of our effort to battle the global warming and climate change. Here we report that the unique high-flux and high-selectivity of electrochemical silver-carbonate dual-phase membranes can be retained for an extended period of operation by overcoating the surfaces of porous silver matrix with a uniform layer of Al2O3 thin-film derived from chemical vapor deposition.

Economic Growth Assumptions In Climate And Energy Policy, Nir Y. Krakauer
Economic Growth Assumptions In Climate And Energy Policy, Nir Y. Krakauer
Publications and Research
The assumption that the economic growth seen in recent decades will continue has dominated the discussion of future greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. Given that long-term economic growth is uncertain, the impacts of a wide range of growth trajectories should be considered. In particular, slower economic growth would imply that future generations will be relatively less able to invest in emissions controls or adapt to the detrimental impacts of climate change. Taking into consideration the possibility of economic slowdown therefore heightens the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions now by moving to renewable …

Understanding The Global Energy Crisis, Eugene D. Coyle, Richard A. Simmons
Purdue University Press Books
We are facing a global energy crisis caused by world population growth, an escalating increase in demand, and continued dependence on fossil-based fuels for generation. It is widely accepted that increases in greenhouse gas concentration levels, if not reversed, will result in major changes to world climate with consequential effects on our society and economy. This is just the kind of intractable problem that Purdue University’s Global Policy Research Institute seeks to address in the Purdue Studies in Public Policy series by promoting the engagement between policy makers and experts in fields such as engineering and technology.
Major steps forward …
Impacts Of Climate Changes On The Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Precipitation In The Western United States, Peng Jiang
Impacts Of Climate Changes On The Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Precipitation In The Western United States, Peng Jiang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Precipitation in the Intermountain West is characterized by its great variability in both spatial and temporal distributions. Moreover, the spatiotemporal distribution of the precipitation is changing due to the climate changes. In this dissertation, three studies are conducted to investigate the multi-scale temporal variability of precipitation, the performance of current climate models on this variability, the influence of large-scale ocean oscillations on heavy precipitation, and the impact of human induced global warming on storm properties.
The first study is to examine the performance of current climate models on the simulation of the multi-scale temporal variability determined from the observed station …
Clean Hydrogen Production And Carbon Dioxide Capture Methods, Sushant Kumar
Clean Hydrogen Production And Carbon Dioxide Capture Methods, Sushant Kumar
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuels constitute a significant fraction of the world’s energy demand. The burning of fossil fuels emits huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, the limited availability of fossil fuel resources and the environmental impact of their use require a change to alternative energy sources or carriers (such as hydrogen) in the foreseeable future. The development of methods to mitigate carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere is equally important. Hence, extensive research has been carried out on the development of cost-effective technologies for carbon dioxide capture and techniques to establish hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen is a clean energy fuel …

Can an innovative, team-based, hands-on design and construction project involving high school students change their attitudes and personal preferences for transportation to favor lower impact modes? This was the main question PSTAT (Promoting Sustainable Transportation Among Teens) sought to answer. Since the last decade, global climate change has fuelled increased development of alternative transportation modes that have lesser impact on the environment. However, society is not embracing the change with open arms. Therefore, there is a critical need for a paradigm shift, which could be especially timely for teen-aged students starting to adopt their own personal transportation preferences. By exposing …

Climate change, understood as a statistically significant variation in the mean state of the climate or its variability, is the greatest environmental challenge of this generation (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2001). Marshfield is already being affected by changes in the climate that will have a profound effect on the town’s economy, public health, coastal resources, natural features, water systems, and public and private infrastructure. Adaptation strategies have been widely recognized as playing an important role in improving a community’s ability to respond to climate stressors by resisting damage and recovering quickly. Based on review of climate projections for the …

Pollution is the cause of global warming; this was linked with the world energy poverty, many countries of the world dependent on generators for electricity was blamed on inadequate clean energy supply. Food industries still depend on fossil fuels to power farm tractors and vehicles. Other developing nation’s dependant on fire woods leads to deforestation. Global warming is here, the bad effect is already happening, mostly the world’s poorest people are feeling the impact. Combustion processes in heat engines as one of the leading causes are not checkmated; gases from combustion of carbon compounds burns in oxygen, nitrogen and Carbon …

When asked what the top three issues of the Las Vegas region were, the reply was “water, water, water!" This was the result of a survey done a few years ago of Las Vegas Valley TV anchors. The reason for this response is that sustainability of the urban environments requires sufficient water resources as does population growth. With the advent of global climate change, this resource is in danger. Water flow and mountainous ice packs are impacted by this change in climate there by impacting the amount of water the the region. This is compounded over time as the population …

Effects Of Co2 And Temperature On Biomass Of Parasitic Plants, Ji-Huan He
Ji-Huan He
A general model, based on consistence of metabolic rates of a parasitic plant and its host, is suggested in the paper, that characterizes the effect of atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature on parasite biomass. The model reveals that the increase of global mean surface temperature and CO2 might lead to an unexpected threat from parasite plants to Cryptomeria fortunei which are more than a millennium year old in Mount Tian-Mu, Zhejiang province, People’s Republic of China. The threat triggers serious disease and death in a very short time. The paper also suggests a reasonable approach to the control of biomass …

The Future Of Southern Agriculture, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.
The Future Of Southern Agriculture, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.
Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.
The increasing demand for the supply of energy in the south heavily impacts the allocation of water for use in agriculture. With such a high percentage of the south's freshwater going towards energy production, little can make its way into food, feed, and fiber. Because the need for this exponential energy production in the south is currently greater than its agricultural importance, southern farmers are left to endure heavy irrigation restrictions. The solution to this problem can manifest itself in one of two ways. Southern states can either implement strategies that can reduce plant water consumption without reducing yield, or …

The Promise and Peril of Oil Shale Development (February 5)
The largest known oil shale deposits in the world are in the Green River Formation, which covers portions of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Fully one-half of the world’s oil shale lies within 150 miles of Grand Junction, Colorado, and about 80% of these reserves are on federal land. Estimates of recoverable reserves in the Green River Formation range from 500 billion to 1.53 trillion barrels. At present consumption rates, this is enough oil to satisfy 100% of U.S. demand for well over 100 years.
Development of oil shale could cause significant impacts on the Colorado Plateau. It would provide for …

Energy costs are increasing at an alarming rate, and electricity use can contribute to carbon emissions and, therefore, to global warming. With this in mind and under direction of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Facilities Management Department, researchers conducted building occupancy surveys of UAB buildings after working hours and on weekends to evaluate occupancy by day and time and by lighting condition of unoccupied rooms. The goals of this research consisted of identifying situations in which measures such as motion sensor installation or heating and/or air conditioning shutdown or setback could result in energy and cost savings and …
