Recycled Polycarbonate And Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Feedstocks For Circular Economy Product Applications With Fused Granular Fabrication-Based Additive Manufacturing, Alessia Romani, Marinella Levi, Joshua M. Pearce

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Distributed recycling and additive manufacturing (DRAM) holds enormous promise for enabling a circular economy. Most DRAM studies have focused on single thermoplastic waste stream. This study takes three paths forward from the previous literature: 1) expanding DRAM into high-performance polycarbonate/ acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) blends, 2) extending PC/ABS blend research into both recycled materials and into direct fused granular fabrication (FGF) 3-D printing and 3) demonstrating the potential of using recycled PC/ABS feedstocks for new applications in circular economy contexts. A commercial open source large-format FGF 3-D printer was modified and used to assess the different printability and accuracy of …

Development Of A Potassium Permanganate Catalyst-Infused Fuel Grain For Hydrogen Peroxide Hybrid Thruster Ignition Enhancement, Ryan J. Thibaudeau Dec 2023

Development Of A Potassium Permanganate Catalyst-Infused Fuel Grain For Hydrogen Peroxide Hybrid Thruster Ignition Enhancement, Ryan J. Thibaudeau

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This thesis describes and addresses the need for reliable ignition in small satellite hybrid propulsion systems using hydrogen peroxide. It describes process of creating custom 3D printed ABS plastic fuel grains with small amounts of catalysts. These catalysts lead to a more reliable and energy-efficient ignition of a hybrid rocked propulsion system using catalyst-infused ABS and high-test hydrogen peroxide (HTP). Hydrogen peroxide is a high-density oxidizer and therefore more volumetrically efficient for a small satellite using hybrid rocket technology when compared to gaseous oxygen (GOX). The traditional ignition methods of hybrid rocket propulsion systems using HTP are compared to and …

Bending Performance And Failure Mechanisms Of Hybrid And Regular Sandwich Composite Structures With 3d Printed Corrugated Cores, S.Z.H. Shah, Khurram Altaf, Juhyeong Lee, Tahir Sharif, Rizwan Saeed Choudhry, S. M. Hussain Sep 2023

Bending Performance And Failure Mechanisms Of Hybrid And Regular Sandwich Composite Structures With 3d Printed Corrugated Cores, S.Z.H. Shah, Khurram Altaf, Juhyeong Lee, Tahir Sharif, Rizwan Saeed Choudhry, S. M. Hussain

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The effect of core geometry and hybridization on the bending performance and failure mechanisms of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) corrugated sandwich composite structures (SCS) were experimentally investigated using a three-point bend test. The CFRP and GFRP corrugated cores and facesheets were produced using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and vacuum-assisted infusion processes, respectively. Three types of corrugated SCSs were built: SCSs with different core geometries (circular, square, trapezoidal, sinusoidal, and triangular), hybrid SCSs with different CFRP and GFRP cores and facesheets, and fully 3D-printed CFRP and GFRP SCSs. The corrugated SCS with square core geometry outperformed …
