Augmented Reality Enhancing The Inspections Of Transportation Infrastructure: Research, Education, And Industry Implementation, Fernando Moreu, Chris Lippitt, Dilendra Maharjan, Marlon Aguero, Xinxing Yuan

Publications

Transportation infrastructure needs continuous monitoring that is conducted by field inspectors regularly in the field. Currently, infrastructure inspectors climb, measure, and photograph structures annually to inform repair needs and prioritize decisions. In order to promote and accelerate early learner's expertise in decision-making capabilities during infrastructure inspections, this research project developed various software applications using augmented reality (AR) as an inspection tool for bridges and bridge management, more specifically. By objectively quantifying infrastructure field inspections, inspectors can make more accurate field assessments and managers can make better-informed decisions. This project collaborated with stakeholders, national laboratories, DOT agencies such as NCHRP and …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin Jun 2019

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin

Honors Theses

Structural health monitoring has the potential to allow composite structures to be more reliable and safer, then by using more traditional damage assessment techniques. Structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizes individual sensor units that are placed throughout the load bearing sections of a structure and gather data that is used for stress analysis and damage detection. Statistical time based algorithms are used to analyze collected data and determine both damage size and probable location from within the structure. While traditional calculations and life span analysis can be done for structures made of isotropic materials such as steel or other metals, composites …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Laminate Structures Using Shear-Mode Piezoelectric Sensors, Hussain Altammar May 2019

Structural Health Monitoring Of Laminate Structures Using Shear-Mode Piezoelectric Sensors, Hussain Altammar

Theses and Dissertations

Structural health monitoring (SHM) employing embedded piezoelectric transducers has shown potential as a promising solution for inspection of different engineering structures such as aircraft, bridges, and renewable energy structures. Despite advancements in the field of ultrasonic SHM, inspection of laminate structures is still a major challenge due to their susceptibility to various joint defects. This thesis presents a novel approach to tackle the challenge of inspecting laminate structures using shear-mode (d35) piezoelectric transducers that are made of lead zirconate titanate (PZT).

This study begins with the characterization of d35 piezoelectric transducers using analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches. The results were …

Development Of A Mechanical Device For Measuring Connection Rotations During Seismic Loading, Garrett Tatum May 2019

Development Of A Mechanical Device For Measuring Connection Rotations During Seismic Loading, Garrett Tatum

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This engineering design project sought to design a cheap and easy-to-use sensor to monitor seismic connection rotations in steel buildings during earthquakes by using a linear ratchet mechanism. The idea for the project goes against the mainstream of research that is seeking to develop complex digital networks for monitoring structures in earthquake regions. Whereas many modern sensor networks require high-cost, professionally maintained digital networks, an analog sensor could provide much of the same information at a fraction of the cost, allowing sensors to be more widely utilized, particularly in developing countries. This project required an iterative engineering design process to …

Performance-Based Seismic Monitoring Of Instrumented Buildings, Milad Roohi Jan 2019

Performance-Based Seismic Monitoring Of Instrumented Buildings, Milad Roohi

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation develops a new concept for performance-based monitoring (PBM) of instrumented buildings subjected to earthquakes. This concept is achieved by simultaneously combining and advancing existing knowledge from structural mechanics, signal processing, and performance-based earthquake engineering paradigms. The PBM concept consists of 1) optimal sensor placement, 2) dynamic response reconstruction, 3) damage estimation, and 4) loss analysis. Within the proposed concept, the main theoretical contribution is the derivation of a nonlinear model-based observer (NMBO) for state estimation in nonlinear structural systems. The NMBO employs an efficient iterative algorithm to combine a nonlinear model and limited noise-contaminated response measurements to estimate …
