Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is one of the constituent minerals of bone and teeth, that has been widely used for synthesizing bone graft. Due to the limitation on properties of the hydroxyapatite, it is doping with Magnesium (HAp-Mg). The addition of Chitosan (Chi) was expected to improve the antibacterial properties of HAp-Mg. The present research aims to study the influence of Chitosan with 0, 5, 15, and 25 wt% addition on biocompatibility properties of Chi/HAp-Mg composite. HAp-Mg was synthesized using the sol-gel method; meanwhile, Chi/HAp-Mg composite was manufactured by mixing Chitosan in acetic acid, and HAp-Mg was added into the mixture. The …

Polymer Binder, Impact On The Pull-Out Force Of Macro Fibers In Sprayed Concrete, Klaus Bonin, Christina Neumaier

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

Macro-fibers have been used in sprayed concrete for many years now, particularly to prevent cracks from developing in the concrete due to deformation energy. These fibers can be made of steel or plastics and are provided for the Application. The type of fiber to be used is selected based on the building project’s requirements. Usually, the fibers are added to the sprayed concrete in the standard application’s mixture, regardless of whether the concrete is wet or dry (fiber-reinforced concrete or FRC). FRC’s functional principle is to mechanically anchor the steel or polymer fibers in the dense matrix of the binder …

Electrically-heated pavements have attracted attention as alternatives to the traditional ice/snow removal practices. Electrically conductive polymer-carbon composite coatings provide promising properties for this application. Based on the concept of joule heating, the conductive composite can be utilized as a resistor that generates heat by electric current and increases the surface temperature to melt the ice and snow on the pavement surface. This research investigates the feasibility of applying an electrically conductive composite coating made with a Polyurethane (PU) binder and micrometer-scale carbon fiber (CMF) filler as the electrical heating materials on the surface of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. PU-CMF …
