Analyzing Industrialized Construction Methods In Neca Contractors, Frank Lucey Jun 2022

Analyzing Industrialized Construction Methods In Neca Contractors, Frank Lucey

Construction Management

Construction is constantly changing and evolving. Companies are always looking to improve their skills, provide a better finished product, and satisfy their client all while working in a safe environment. Industrialized Construction is an increasing trend in all sectors of construction over the past couple of years, due to the success of creating a more efficient project. Projects that utilized Industrial Construction saved more time and therefore money, while also exceeding the quality of work expected. Industrialized Construction is a very broad term with a lot of subcategories of what goes into it. These methods of increasing efficiency on the …

Use Of Industrialized Construction Strategies Among Associated General Contractors Of America, Matthew Mackenzie Jun 2022

Use Of Industrialized Construction Strategies Among Associated General Contractors Of America, Matthew Mackenzie

Construction Management

Industrialized construction (IC) strategies are techniques used on a construction project that allows for significant time and schedule savings. The goal of this study is to analyze trends among general contractors and their experience with these strategies. Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) firms were asked various survey questions including size of firm, experience with several types of IC strategies, and their willingness to use similar strategies in the future. By answering questions about their percentage of use of prefabrication, automation, and BIM for various contract types, delivery methods, and payment methods, trends relating to the use of IC emerge. …

Use Of Industrialized Construction Within Mechanical Contractors Association Of America, Nathan M. Yi Jun 2022

Use Of Industrialized Construction Within Mechanical Contractors Association Of America, Nathan M. Yi

Construction Management

It is a constant battle in the construction industry to improve productivity and efficiency while keeping the cost and schedule as low as possible. This can be made possible through the use of industrialized construction strategies such as, prefabrication, building information modeling (BIM), and automation. In this study, the main purpose of this survey was to collect information about MCAA firms’ knowledge of industrialized construction strategies, their use of them in the past, and their willingness to use them in the future. It also aims to explore the use of industrialized construction and its viability as a path for mechanical …

The Benefits And Challenges Of Automation In The Modular Construction Industry, Allen Le Jun 2021

The Benefits And Challenges Of Automation In The Modular Construction Industry, Allen Le

Construction Management

Modular construction combined with automation technology such as robotics presents benefits and challenges associated with it. Modular construction takes on the traditional building methods and has streamlined the production of modules making it safer, efficient, and productive. Along with innovation and cutting-edge technology such as automation, it offers an alternative building method to the modular construction industry that enhances productivity, worker safety, and efficiency. This research presents an investigation on factors that may be benefited from the adoption of automation but also addresses the challenges in modular construction. Qualitative interviews with designers and consultants in the modular industry were conducted …

Artificial Intelligence In Wastewater Treatment Facilities: Implementing Practical New Technologies For The End User, Jordan Spano Jan 2019

Artificial Intelligence In Wastewater Treatment Facilities: Implementing Practical New Technologies For The End User, Jordan Spano

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Design phase operator input can prove useful; however, it is not essential in every application, as Akron’s treatment plant implemented AI to increase treatment capacity without design-phase operator input. They implemented a system flight simulator, a few hours training, and have communicated with the designer to make system tweaks as needed. In larger applications, the owner may benefit greatly by incorporating design input from operational staff. Those representing a municipality as a project owner for a treatment plant upgrade should always maintain an active role in the design of smart water infrastructure. They must keep the operators in mind when …

Automated Pin-Dot Marking Effects On A709-Gr50 Steel Plate Fatigue Capacity, Michael Andrew Noernberg Dec 2017

Automated Pin-Dot Marking Effects On A709-Gr50 Steel Plate Fatigue Capacity, Michael Andrew Noernberg

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During fabrication of multi-piece steel bridge assemblies, markings are often made on the steel surface to identify/track individual pieces or to provide reference for fabrication layout or later erection. Automated marking methods such as computer numerically controlled (CNC) pin-dot marking offer fabrication efficiencies; however, for marked steel sections subjected to frequent or repeated loading (i.e. bridge girders) many code specifications require experimental testing to verify any marking effects on fatigue capacity. In this study, the effects of automated pin-dot markings on the fatigue capacity of A709-Gr50 bridge steel are experimentally investigated from 13 specimens considering 2 marking frequencies (corresponding to …

Remote Control And Automation Of The Crockett Canal Head Gates, Tyler Dean Richards May 2011

Remote Control And Automation Of The Crockett Canal Head Gates, Tyler Dean Richards

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In order to improve the control of the Crockett canal an automated control system for the head gates was proposed and an analysis of design alternatives was conducted. Design alternatives were analyzed based on the criteria of reliability, operational improvement, cost and safety. After the analysis was completed recommendations as to which type of automation system to install were made. A comprehensive design of the recommended design is included. The automation of the head gates has been separated into two phases. Items to be included in phase one are: retrofit each of the existing head gates with a multi-turn gate …

Coordinated Regional And City Planning Using A Genetic Algorithm, Michael B. Lowry Jun 2004

Coordinated Regional And City Planning Using A Genetic Algorithm, Michael B. Lowry

Theses and Dissertations

Improved methods of planning are needed to deal with today's issues of traffic congestion, sprawl, and loss of greenspace. Past research and recent legislation call for new methods that will consider a regional perspective. Regional planning is challenged with two difficult questions:

1.Is it possible to achieve regional goals without infringing upon the local autonomy of city planners?

2.Is it possible to objectively analyze the thousands, even millions, of land use and transportation plans to find the best design?

Metropolitan regions across the country have made great efforts to answer the first question. Unfortunately, effective methods for harmonizing the goals …
