Damage Mechanics Of Composite Materials Using Fabric Tensors, Ziad N. Taqieddin
Damage Mechanics Of Composite Materials Using Fabric Tensors, Ziad N. Taqieddin
LSU Master's Theses
The major objective of this work is to relate continuum damage mechanics introduced through the concept of fabric tensors to composite materials within the framework of classical elasticity theory. A model of directional data-damage mechanics for composite materials is formulated using fabric tensors. In addition, a general hypothesis for damage mechanics is postulated. It is seen that the two available hypotheses of elastic strain equivalence and elastic energy equivalence may be obtained as special cases of the postulated general hypothesis. This general hypothesis is then used to derive the sought relationship between the damage tensor for composite materials and the …
A Robust Noise Spectral Estimation Algorithm For Speech Enhancement In Voice Devices, Brett Joseph Chessher
A Robust Noise Spectral Estimation Algorithm For Speech Enhancement In Voice Devices, Brett Joseph Chessher
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, a new robust noise spectral estimation algorithm is proposed for the purpose of single-microphone speech enhancement. This algorithm can generate the optimal noise spectral estimates in the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) sense based on the speech statistics in the noisy environments. Compared to the well-adopted conventional noise spectral estimation method using the single-pole recursion, our proposed scheme is more reliable since the recursion coefficients are adaptable and optimal in the MMSE therein. We also propose a new accurate Resulting Signal-to-Noise Ratio (R-SNR) estimator as a quality measure to benchmark the existing noise spectral estimation techniques. This …
Traffic Engineering In Multiprotocol Label Switching Vpns, Vinay Kumar Desai
Traffic Engineering In Multiprotocol Label Switching Vpns, Vinay Kumar Desai
LSU Master's Theses
The changing nature of Internet-based applications is imposing stricter demands on the performance of the Internet. For many new applications requiring differentiated quality of service, the best effort model of the internet is no longer adequate. Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) overlays a connection oriented network on the connection-less IP networks, thereby addressing several shortcomings of the IP network. MPLS improves the forwarding speed, and it provides a virtual path capability to efficiently carry differentiated services. Additionally, MPLS enables traffic engineering by explicit traffic engineering tunnels to be set up across the network to utilize all available bandwidth in an efficient …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Feeding Channel In Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Abul Bashar Mahmud Hasan
LSU Master's Theses
The performance of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) using different feeding configurations has been studied, with a focus on the water flooding due to electrochemical reaction. Feeding channel or Bipolar plate in Proton Exchange Fuel Cell is a dominating part. As feeding channel keeps direct contact with the gas diffusion layer, it helps efficiently supplying fuel and air into the gas diffusion layer for efficient production of electricity. Experimental data have been taken at hydrogen flow rates of 20,40,60,80,100 sccm for various bipolar plate arrangements. Three bipolar plates, namely serpentine, straight channel and interdigitated designs, were arranged in …
Zeolite And Metal Oxide Catalysts For The Production Of Dimethyl Sulfide And Methanethiol, Craig Plaisance
Zeolite And Metal Oxide Catalysts For The Production Of Dimethyl Sulfide And Methanethiol, Craig Plaisance
LSU Master's Theses
Metal oxide and zeolite catalysts were examined to determine their suitability for the production of methanethiol and dimethyl sulfide from the condensation of methanol and hydrogen sulfide. Fixed bed reactor experiments were used to test the catalysts in these processes. The acid sites of these catalysts were characterized by investigating the thermal desorption of 1-propanamine from these sites. It was found that WO3/ZrO2, La2O3/Al2O3, g-Al2O3, and HZSM-5 catalysts were active and selective in the production of dimethyl sulfide. On these four catalysts, the reaction converting methanol to dimethyl ether and the methanethiol disproportionation reaction were fast and close to equilibrium. …
Mapping Weak Multidimensional Torus Communications On Optical Slab Waveguides, Karthik Sethuraman
Mapping Weak Multidimensional Torus Communications On Optical Slab Waveguides, Karthik Sethuraman
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis deals with the mapping of communication of a d-dimensional weak torus on an optical medium. Our results are derived in the setting of a sawtooth slab waveguide. The mapping aims to reduce the number and cost of optical components, by exploiting the fact that not all edges of a weak topology are used simultaneously. This approach allows for a better utilization of the huge bandwidth of an optical slab waveguide; currently the cost and size of optical components external to the optical communication medium are the primary bottleneck of an optical interconnect. We introduce the notion of adjacency …
Experimental Investigation Of Stick-Slip Behavior In Granular Materials, Lynne E. Roussel
Experimental Investigation Of Stick-Slip Behavior In Granular Materials, Lynne E. Roussel
LSU Master's Theses
The mechanical behavior of granular materials is highly dependent on the arrangement of particles, particle groups, and associated pore spaces. Changes in the internal structure due to large deformation may cause changes in the mechanical behavior. The changes include: particle sliding, rolling, and interaction; shear band formation; and fabric anisotropy. During those changes, stick-slip behavior may take place between the granular particles. The objective of the thesis is to study the factors that influence the stick-slip behavior of granular materials. The influence of particle size, uniformity, confining pressure, density, and strain rate are investigated in this thesis. A series of …

Analysis Of Performance Of Single-Phase Reluctance Linear Motor, Subhadra Devi Ganti
LSU Master's Theses
The design and principle of operation, as well as the electromechanical phenomena of a single-phase linear reluctance motor are discussed. The motor with transverse magnetic flux consists of a primary part, which is moving and a secondary part which is stationary and does not have any windings. The motor can operate under AC or DC supply. When supplied from an AC source it must be equipped with a capacitor connected in series with the coil. In this case the motor operates on the basis of resonance in an RLC primary circuit. When supplied from a DC source it must be …

An Application Of Parallel Computation To Collaborative Optimization, Shahab Nayyer
LSU Master's Theses
Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) has evolved as a discipline which provides a body of methods and techniques to assist engineers in solving large scale design problems. There are many frameworks for formulating MDO problems. These frameworks can be broadly classified as single-level or bi-level formulations. Collaborative Optimization (CO) is one of the popular bi-level formulations to solve an MDO problem. There are numerous design optimization problems which are highly CPU time intensive and require a long simulation time. With the advent of cheaper and faster available PC’s, distributed parallel computer clusters have become very popular. These clusters provide large computing …

Fuzzifying [Sic] Markov Decision Process, Ahmed Syed Irshad
LSU Master's Theses
Markov decision processes have become an indispensable tool in applications as diverse as equipment maintenance, manufacturing systems, inventory control, queuing networks and investment analysis. Typically we have a controlled Markov chain on a suitable state space in which transitional probabilities depend on the policy (or decision maker) which comes from a set of possible actions. The main problem of interest would be to find an optimal policy that minimizes the associated cost. Linear Programming has been widely used to find the optimal Markov decision policy. It requires solutions of large systems of simultaneous linear equations. By the fact that the …
Purification And Structural Characterization Of Caged Dna Oligonucleotides, Brendan Michael Mcadams
Purification And Structural Characterization Of Caged Dna Oligonucleotides, Brendan Michael Mcadams
LSU Master's Theses
“Cage” molecules reversibly block the bioactivity of a target substrate molecule by a photolyzable covalent bond formed at a functional site of the target molecule. The attachment of cage molecules to DNA oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) to transiently block bioactivity, and site-specific restoration of bioactivity using targeted light exposure, would enable a new method of control for use in gene therapy, molecular/DNA computing, molecular biology, and drug delivery. The reaction of the cage molecule 1-(4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrophenyl)diazoethane (DMNPE) with DNA ODNs in an batch reaction yields a mixture of products with varying degrees of caging. Purification and verification of the hypothesized site of DMNPE …

Modeling And Experimentation Of Drying Of Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells, Surbhi Mittal
LSU Master's Theses
Development of protocols for storing desiccated cells at ambient temperatures offers tremendous economic and practical advantages over traditional storage procedures such as cryopreservation and freeze-drying. An integrated frame work of experimentation and modeling is adopted in the present work to develop procedures for storage of adult stem cells at ambient temperature. As a first step, we have measured the post-rehydration membrane integrity of two passages, Passage-0 (P0) and Passage-1 (P1), of human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). hASCs were dried using a convective stage at three different drying rates (slow, moderate and rapid) in D-PBS with trehalose (50 mM) and glycerol …
Experimental Investigation Of Drilling Fluid Formulations And Processing Methods For A Riser Dilution Approach To Dual Density Drilling, John Shelton
LSU Master's Theses
Oil and natural gas resources in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico are important for the U.S. economy, but development is limited by high costs. Dual density drilling concepts that result in wellbore pressure gradients similar to the natural subsurface gradients can simplify well designs and reduce costs. Riser dilution may be an economical means of achieving such a system. This system would use a low density fluid to dilute the weighted wellbore fluid and give an intermediate density fluid in the riser. Two key concerns addressed in this study are whether a drilling fluid can be formulated that will suspend …

Electrodeposition Of Magnetic Nanowires And Nanotubes, Despina Mehedintu Davis
LSU Master's Theses
The current perpendicular to the plane giant magneto-resistance (CPP)-(GMR) effect makes multilayered nanowires of huge interest as magnetic sensor materials. GMR showing multilayer nanostructures are composed of alternating ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic nanometric layers. The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) property is described as a change in electrical resistance when an external magnetic field is introduced. Electrodeposition is the most efficient method for fabricating magnetic nanowires. In addition to the cost-effectiveness, electrodeposition is one of the few methods that can overcome the geometrical restrictions of inserting metals into very deep nanometric recesses, making it the favored method for nanowire and nanotube fabrication. In …

A Study Of Distributed Clustering Of Vector Time Series On The Grid By Task Farming, Arun B. Nayar
LSU Master's Theses
Traditional data mining methods were limited by availability of computing resources like network bandwidth, storage space and processing power. These algorithms were developed to work around this problem by looking at a small cross-section of the whole data available. However since a major chunk of the data is kept out, the predictions were generally inaccurate and missed out on significant features that was part of the data. Today with resources growing at almost the same pace as data, it is possible to rethink mining algorithms to work on distributed resources and essentially distributed data. Distributed data mining thus holds great …

Target Tracking In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tarun Anand Malik
LSU Master's Theses
The problem being tackled here relates to the problem of target tracking in wireless sensor networks. It is a specific problem in localization. Localization primarily refers to the detection of spatial coordinates of a node or an object. Target tracking deals with finding spatial coordinates of a moving object and being able to track its movements. In the tracking scheme illustrated, sensors are deployed in a triangular fashion in a hexagonal mesh such that the hexagon is divided into a number of equilateral triangles. The technique used for detection is the trilateration technique in which intersection of three circles is …
An Evaluation Of Ansys Contact Elements, Serhan Sezer
An Evaluation Of Ansys Contact Elements, Serhan Sezer
LSU Master's Theses
The ANSYS code offers stress analysts a variety of contact element options: point-to-surface or surface-to-surface and low-order or high-order elements, in concert with any one of five contact algorithms (augmented Lagrangian, penalty method, etc.). This raises questions as to what option performs best under what circumstances. Here we offer some answers to these questions by examining performance in some numerical experiments. The numerical experiments focus on frictionless contact with a rigid indenter; even so, the number of experiments involved is quite large. The experiments use a battery of test problems with known analytical solutions: contact patch tests with nodes matching …

The proposed circuit has been implemented in 0.5 µm n-well CMOS technology. The ternary input signals of {-1, 0, +1} are represented as -3 V, 0 V and +3 V, respectively. The ternary input is given as a combination of any two of the three voltage levels and the 4-bit binary output is generated in which the left most bit is sign bit (SB) followed by most significant bit (MSB), second significant bit (SSB) and the least significant bit …
Development Of Process Techniques For Bistable Microbeam Fabrication, Varsha Francis
Development Of Process Techniques For Bistable Microbeam Fabrication, Varsha Francis
LSU Master's Theses
A design which uses bistable beams to modulate light is suggested in this thesis and appropriate processing techniques are presented. A beam when placed under compression above the Euler limit has two stable states. The compression in an electroplated beam can be controlled by the plating current density of nickel during electrodeposition. This beam is attached to an electromechanical comb. Voltages applied to the combs cause the beam to snap from one stable state to another. Structures were designed with dimensions that gave feasible voltages, snap distances, compressions required to snap. A two mask process was used for the fabrication …
New Contention Resolution Techniques For Optical Burst Switching, Kishore Reddy Koduru
New Contention Resolution Techniques For Optical Burst Switching, Kishore Reddy Koduru
LSU Master's Theses
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a technology positioned between wavelength routing and optical packet switching that does not require optical buffering or packet-level parsing, and it is more efficient than circuit switching when the sustained traffic volume does not consume a full wavelength. However, several critical issues still need to be solved such as contention resolution without optical buffering which is a key determinant of packet-loss with a significant impact on network performance. Deflection routing is an approach for resolving contention by routing a contending packet to an output port other than the intended output port. In OBS networks, when …
Cognitive Memory Effects On Non-Linear Video-Based Learning, Katherine Renee Comeaux
Cognitive Memory Effects On Non-Linear Video-Based Learning, Katherine Renee Comeaux
LSU Master's Theses
During an informative learning process, information, material, facts and ideas are typically conveyed in a linear arrangement. Individuals are frequently distracted during this process with their attention being diverted to an interruption (Internet, phone call, etc). When presented with any new information, the mind evolves through problem solving and evaluation procedures. The way in which that information is processed and perceived depends on: (a) original presentation (b) examination of material and (c) an individualistic measurement of success. However, when faced with an interruption, the person is forced to deal with non-linear arrangement of information. This research investigates nonlinear presentation or …

Experimental Sloshing Studies In Sway And Heave Base Excited Square Tanks, Wei Peng
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, free-surface water waves are experimentally investigated with a focus on sloshing in tanks. The sloshing problem is selected for its relatively simple geometry, yet it captures the features of nonlinearities including wave breaking. Free-surface motions are monitored in a square tank with base dimensions of 1 x 1 m2. Sloshing motions have been studied both off- and at resonance in shallow to deep water to investigate nonlinear free surface effects. The tank has been prescribed to move in sway and / or heave excitation. Interesting hysteresis behavior at the surface is captured at and near resonance. Faraday …
