Proof Of Concept: Biocement For Road Repair, Jian Chu, Zhiyou Wen Mar 2015

Proof Of Concept: Biocement For Road Repair, Jian Chu, Zhiyou Wen

InTrans Project Reports

Road repair is an expensive operation every year. This cost can be greatly reduced if waste materials from the mining and biofuel industries can be used to substitute conventional materials for road repair or construction. The objective of this project is to develop methods to produce a new construction material, biocement, using waste products and apply the new material for road repair and construction. Two types of waste were used in this study. One is limestone fines produced from a limestone mine in Iowa. Another is organic acids, a byproduct produced from a pyrolysis-based biofuel manufacturing process. The limestone fines ...

Factorial Design Approach In Proportioning Prestressed Self-Compacting Concrete, Wu-Jian Long, Kamal Khayat, Guillaume Lemieux, Feng Xing, Wei-Lun Wang Mar 2015

Factorial Design Approach In Proportioning Prestressed Self-Compacting Concrete, Wu-Jian Long, Kamal Khayat, Guillaume Lemieux, Feng Xing, Wei-Lun Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to model the effect of mixture parameters and material properties on the hardened properties of, prestressed self-compacting concrete (SCC), and also to investigate the extensions of the statistical models, a factorial design was employed to identify the relative significance of these primary parameters and their interactions in terms of the mechanical and visco-elastic properties of SCC. In addition to the 16 fractional factorial mixtures evaluated in the modeled region of -1 to +1, eight axial mixtures were prepared at extreme values of -2 and +2 with the other variables maintained at the central points. Four replicate central mixtures ...

Utilisation Of Iron Ore Tailings As Aggregates In Concrete, Francis Atta Kuranchie, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Daryoush Habibi, Alireza Mohyeddin Jan 2015

Utilisation Of Iron Ore Tailings As Aggregates In Concrete, Francis Atta Kuranchie, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Daryoush Habibi, Alireza Mohyeddin

ECU Publications Post 2013

Sustainable handling of iron ore tailings is of prime concern to all stakeholders who are into iron ore mining. This study seeks to add value to the tailings by utilising them as a replacement for aggregates in concrete. A concrete mix of grade 40 MPa was prepared in the laboratory with water–cement ratio of 0.5. The concrete were cured for 1, 2, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The properties of the concrete such as workability, durability, density, compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were tested. A controlled mix of concrete was also prepared in similar way using ...
