Ultrasound-Assisted Swnts Dispersion: Effects Of Sonication Parameters And Solvent Properties, Qiaohuan Cheng, Sourabhi Debnath, Elizabeth Gregan, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Ultrasonication is widely used for preparing Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWNT) dispersions in different solvent media and it has been shown to play a critical role in dispersing and debundling SWNTs. The strong shear force that can exfoliate the SWNT bundles during sonication comes from cavitation, which entails a process of bubble formation, growth, and collapse. The efficiency of the cavitation process is closely correlated to many solvent parameters, including vapor pressure, viscosity, and surface tension, as well as the sonication frequency, intensity, and time. In this study, SWNTs were dispersed in a range of organic solvents assisted by tip sonication. …

Magnetic Properties Of Ho2fe17-Xmnx - Influence Of Mn Substitution, Jianli Wang, Stewart J. Campbell, A J Studer, S J. Kennedy, Rong Zeng

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The structural and magnetic properties of Ho2Fe17−xMnx (x=0-5) have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and DC magnetization measurements (0-5 T) over the temperature range 4.5-350 K. Similar to other ferrimagnetic R2Fe17-xMnx systems, the unit cell volume generally increases with Mn content other than for low Mn values where a slight maximum is detected around x ∼ 0.5. The nature of the magnetic phase transitions around TC is shown by Arrot plot analysis to be second order for all samples. The Curie temperature remains essentially unchanged …

The Mechanical And The Electrical Properties Of Conducting Polypyrrole Fibers, Javad Foroughi, Shaban R. Ghorbani, Germanas Peleckis, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The mechanical and the electrical properties of polypyrrole (PPy) fibers and electrochemically deposited PPy films were studied. It was found that the PPy fibers showed a significantly higher strength than the PPy films due to better orientation of the molecular structure. The electrochemically prepared PPy films had a higher electrical conductivity than that of the fibers at high temperature. At low temperature, the PPy fibers showed the higher conductivity. The conductivity results were analyzed in the frame of the three-dimensional variable range hopping model. The results showed that at room temperature the average hopping distance for the fibers was about …

Structure, Magnetic, And Thermal Properties Of Nd1-Xlaxcro3 (0 ≤ X ≤ 1.0), Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Perovskite-type Nd1−xLaxCrO3(0 ≤ x ≤1.0) polycrystalline samples were synthesized using solid state reaction. Structural studies indicate that the lattice parameters, metal–oxygen bond lengths, and angles of Nd1−xLaxCrO3 strongly depend on the La content. Two magnetic transition temperatures, Cr3+ antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) and the spin reorientation phase transition temperature (TSRPT), have been observed in the M-T curves. The increase in TN and decrease in TSRPT with increasing x value can be explained by the change in the magnetic interactions due to La …

We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties for La doped Bi2FeMnO6 (LBFM) ceramic and film which was first deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. The LBFM film is antiferromagnetic or weak ferrimagnetic at room temperature and it shows clear magnetic anisotropy. But it is not sure whether the spin-glass behavior is present in LBFM film because of the influence from substrate. Compared to the film, LBFM ceramic shows different magnetic properties. It has a lower TN and all the observations indicate that LBFM ceramic shows spin-glass behavior.

One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a=3.8015(2) and c =6.0280(4) Å. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg–Landau theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to …

Lanthanum Doped Multiferroic Dyfeo3: Structural And Magnetic Properties, Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Lanthanum doped multiferroic DyFeO3 was synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction and refinement show that the lattice parameters of Dy1−xLaxFeO3 increase linearly with the La content. Raman spectroscopy reveals that the short-range force constant in Dy1−xLaxFeO3 is decreased by La3+ ion substitution. The spin reorientation phase transition temperature (TSRPT) is observed to decrease along with the doping level. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN of Fe3+ ions is depressed with increasing doping level. Both decreasing TSRPT and decreasing TN indicate that Fe–Dy and Fe–Fe …

Single phase Bi2FeMnO6 was synthesized on Si substrates by an electrospray method. Three peaks were observed in the temperature dependence of magnetization curve, which is attributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of Fe3+ and Mn3+. The observed magnetic peaks at 150 K, 260 K, and 440 K correspond to orderings of the ferrimagnetic Fe–O–Mn, and antiferromagnetic Mn–O–Mn and Fe–O–Fe, respectively. Heat capacity measurements were carried out to confirm these magnetic transitions. The Debye temperature of Bi2FeMnO6 is 339 K, calculated from Debye–Einstein fitting.

We report the antimony (Sb) doping effect in a prototype system of iron-based superconductors LaFeAsO1−y F y (y=0, 0.1, 0.15). X-ray powder diffraction indicates that the lattice parameters increase with Sb content within the doping limit. Rietveld structural refinements show that, with the partial substitution of Sb for As, the thickness of the Fe2As2 layers increases significantly, whereas that of the La2O2 layers shrinks simultaneously. So a negative chemical pressure is indeed “applied” to the superconducting-active Fe2As2 layers, in contrast to the effect of positive chemical pressure …

Different morphologies of α+β microstructures were obtained in a commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy by cooling at different rates from the single β-phase region into the two phase region. The effect of such morphologies on mechanical properties was studied using hot compression tests in a Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. A variety of complex morphologies could be obtained since the cooling rate has a significant influence on the β to α phase transformation and the resulting morphological development. While most of the β phase transformed to colonies of α at high cooling rates, it was possible to obtain a complex mixture of a colonies, …

Interstitial-free steel and OFHC copper were subjected to 8 passes, route BC room temperature ECAE followed by cold-rolling up to 97.5% thickness reduction. Uniaxial tensile tests and Electron Back-Scattering Diffraction were used to characterise the evolution in mechanical properties, microstructure refinement and micro-texture. IF-steel showed continuous increase in strength whereas Cu returned reduced strength and a small gain in ductility at 97.5% reduction. In both metals substructure refinement was accompanied by an increase in high-angle boundary fraction, average misorientation and a slight increase in Σ3 boundaries. An evolution of crystallographic orientations from negative shear to predominantly cold-rolled textures after …

Hollow-structured α-Fe2O3/carbon (HIOC) nanocomposite with a high surface area of around 260 m2 g−1 was synthesized by a one-step, in situ, and industrially-oriented spray pyrolysis method using iron lactate and sucrose solution as the precursors. The small α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals were highly dispersed inside amorphous carbon to form a carbon nanocomposite. Electrochemical measurements showed that the carbon played an important role in affecting both the cycle life and the rate capability of the electrode. The HIOC composites showed the best electrochemical performance in terms of high capacity (1210 mAh g−1 …

In this contribution, the subtle periodic nanostructures in butterfly wings and peacock feathers are applied as natural PhC matrices to in situ embed CdS nanocrystallites (nano-CdS) on the structure surface via a convenient solution process. The resulting nano-CdS/natural PhCs nanocomposites show typical 1D, quasi 1D and 2D PhC structures at the nanoscale, which is inherited from the corresponding natural periodic bio-matrices. Moreover, their reflection properties are investigated and show dependence on PhC type, structure parameter, loading amount, as well as collecting angle. This work suggests that natural periodic bio-structures could be perfect matrices to construct novel nanocomposite PhCs, whose photonic …

Nanoparticles of iron boride (Fe2B, Fe2B coated in SiO2, FexCo2xB coated in SiO2) were synthesized using the reduction of metal ions by sodium borohydride. X-ray diffraction confirms the amorphicity of the coated compounds and scanning electron microscope imaging revealed the nanoparticulated structure of all compounds. The splitting between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled temperature dependent magnetization curves point to the blocking of superparamagnetic particles magnetization. Magnetic hysteresis loops are however consistent with the combined effects of blocked superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic (multidomain) particles. The observed quite complex magnetic behaviour is in …

Coal Properties And Mine Operational Factors That Impact Gas Drainage, Dennis J. Black, Naj Aziz Jan 2010

Coal Properties And Mine Operational Factors That Impact Gas Drainage, Dennis J. Black, Naj Aziz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Advances in coal production over the last 20 years have led to an increase in coal mine gas emissions. These gas emissions, if not effectively managed, may exceed the diluting capacity of the mine’s ventilation system resulting in gas concentrations in excess of statutory limits and the presence of an unsafe condition within the mine. Where such conditions exist it is typical for production to be slowed or stopped until such time as the rate of gas emission is effectively controlled and managed. This paper discusses the findings of a research project based on an underground mine operating in the …
