A Bayesian Approach For Lifetime Modeling And Prediction With Multi-Type Group-Shared Missing Covariates, Hao Zeng, Xuxue Sun, Kuo Wang, Yuxin Wen, Wujun Si, Mingyang Li

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In the field of reliability engineering, covariate information shared among product units within a specific group (e.g., a manufacturing batch, an operating region), such as operating conditions and design settings, exerts substantial influence on product lifetime prediction. The covariates shared within each group may be missing due to sensing limitations and data privacy issues. The missing covariates shared within the same group commonly encompass a variety of attribute types, such as discrete types, continuous types, or mixed types. Existing studies have mainly considered single-type missing covariates at the individual level, and they have failed to thoroughly investigate the influence of …

Low Shear In Short-Term Impacts Endothelial Cell Traction And Alignment In Long-Term, Mohanish Chandurkar, Nikhil Mittal, Shaina P. Royer-Weeden, Steven D. Lehmann, Yeonwoo Rho, Sangyoon J. Han

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Within the vascular system, endothelial cells (ECs) are exposed to fluid shear stress (FSS), a mechanical force exerted by blood flow that is critical for regulating cellular tension and maintaining vascular homeostasis. The way ECs react to FSS varies significantly; while high, laminar FSS supports vasodilation and suppresses inflammation, low or disturbed FSS can lead to endothelial dysfunction and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Yet, the adaptation of ECs to dynamically varying FSS remains poorly understood. This study focuses on the dynamic responses of ECs to brief periods of low FSS, examining its impact on endothelial traction-a measure of …

Yet, Multiple Imputation Has Been Under-Utilized To Address Missingness, When Clustering Medical Data. Its Limited Integration In Clustering Of Medical Data, Despite The Known Advantages And Benefits Of Multiple Imputation, Could Be Attributed To Many Factors. This Includes Methodological Complexity, Difficulties In Pooling Results To Obtain A Consensus Clustering, Uncertainty Regarding …

Complete Solution Of The Lady In The Lake Scenario, Alexander Von Moll, Meir Pachter Jan 2024

Complete Solution Of The Lady In The Lake Scenario, Alexander Von Moll, Meir Pachter

Faculty Publications

In the Lady in the Lake scenario, a mobile agent, L, is pitted against an agent, M, who is constrained to move along the perimeter of a circle. L is assumed to begin inside the circle and wishes to escape to the perimeter with some finite angular separation from M at the perimeter. This scenario has, in the past, been formulated as a zero-sum differential game wherein L seeks to maximize terminal separation and M seeks to minimize it. Its solution is well-known. However, there is a large portion of the state space for which the canonical solution does not …

On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez Dec 2023

On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In order to communicate information over a noisy channel, error-correcting codes can be used to ensure that small errors don’t prevent the transmission of a message. One family of codes that has been found to have good properties is low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. These are represented by sparse bipartite graphs and have low complexity graph-based decoding algorithms. Various graphical properties, such as the girth and stopping sets, influence when these algorithms might fail. Additionally, codes based on algebraically structured parity check matrices are desirable in applications due to their compact representations, practical implementation advantages, and tractable decoder performance analysis. …

Bioactivity And Structural Properties Of Hydroxyapatite On Ti6a|4v And Si(100) Surfaces By Pulsed Laser Deposition, Salizhan Kylchbekov

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although biomedical implant technology is very advanced, there are still caveats in terms of biocompatibility properties because metals are inert to biological processes such as osseointegration, cell growth, and cell adhesion. This results in statistically significant complications and opens rooms for improvements. Among many techniques to improve this problem, coating the metal surface with biologically functional materials has resulted in the best performances. Hydroxyapatite (HAP), Ca₁₀(PO)(OH), is the most stable form of calcium phosphates in human body environment and is functional in key processes such as ion exchange, osteoblast (bone cells) formation, …

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

This publication explores the significance of Keyhole Markup Language (KML) in telecommunications, particularly in the context of 5G mmWave RF design and planning. With the advent of 5G mmWave technology, the demand for seamless and efficient network deployments has never been greater. The deployment of small cells and repeaters for 5G mmWave necessitates utmost precision in location accuracy and rapid information exchange during site surveys and evaluations. The challenges of mmWave frequencies, including their limited range and susceptibility to attenuation, intensify the complexity and criticality of this process. Network operators must ensure that the chosen location is devoid of obstacles …

Kinetic Particle Simulations Of Plasma Charging At Lunar Craters Under Severe Conditions, David Lund, Xiaoming He, Daoru Frank Han

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents fully kinetic particle simulations of plasma charging at lunar craters with the presence of lunar lander modules using the recently developed Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell (PIFE-PIC) code. The computation model explicitly includes the lunar regolith layer on top of the lunar bedrock, taking into account the regolith layer thickness and permittivity as well as the lunar lander module in the simulation domain, resolving a nontrivial surface terrain or lunar lander configuration. Simulations were carried out to study the lunar surface and lunar lander module charging near craters at the lunar terminator region under mean and severe plasma environments. …

Completeness Of Nominal Props, Samuel Balco, Alexander Kurz Jan 2023

Completeness Of Nominal Props, Samuel Balco, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce nominal string diagrams as string diagrams internal in the category of nominal sets. This leads us to define nominal PROPs and nominal monoidal theories. We show that the categories of ordinary PROPs and nominal PROPs are equivalent. This equivalence is then extended to symmetric monoidal theories and nominal monoidal theories, which allows us to transfer completeness results between ordinary and nominal calculi for string diagrams.

On Neutro-La-Semihypergroups And Neutro-Hv-La-Semigroup, Saeid Mirvakili, Akbar Rezaei, Omaima Al-Shanqiti, Florentin Smarandache, Bijan Davvaz

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we extend the notion of LA-semihypergroups (resp. Hv-LA-semigroups) to neutro-LA-semihypergroups (respectively, neutro-Hv-LA-semigroups). Anti-LA-semihypergroups (respectively, anti-Hv-LA-semigroups) are studied and investigated some of their properties. We show that these new concepts are different from classical concepts by several examples. These are particular cases of the classical algebraic structures generalized to neutroalgebraic structures and antialgebraic structures (Smarandache, 2019).

Machine-Assisted Discovery Of Integrable Symplectic Mappings, T. Zolkin, Y. Kharkov, S. Nagaitsev Jan 2023

Machine-Assisted Discovery Of Integrable Symplectic Mappings, T. Zolkin, Y. Kharkov, S. Nagaitsev

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a new automated method for finding integrable symplectic maps of the plane. These dynamical systems possess a hidden symmetry associated with an existence of conserved quantities, i.e., integrals of motion. The core idea of the algorithm is based on the knowledge that the evolution of an integrable system in the phase space is restricted to a lower-dimensional submanifold. Limiting ourselves to polygon invariants of motion, we analyze the shape of individual trajectories thus successfully distinguishing integrable motion from chaotic cases. For example, our method rediscovers some of the famous McMillan-Suris integrable mappings and ultradiscrete Painlevé equations. In total, …

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu Jan 2023

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Attempts to reduce jet noise began some 70 years ago. In the literature, there have been many publications written on this topic. By now, it is common knowledge that jet noise consists of a number of components. They possess different spectral and radiation characteristics and are generated by different mechanisms. It appears then that one may aim at the suppression of the noise of a single component instead of trying to reduce jet noise overall. The objective of the present project is to reduce large turbulence structures noise. It is the most dominant noise component radiating in the downstream direction. …

Decision Making Based On Valued Fuzzy Superhypergraphs, Mohammad Hamidi, Florentin Smarandache, Mohadeseh Taghinezhad

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper explores the defects in fuzzy (hyper) graphs (as complex (hyper) networks) and extends the fuzzy (hyper) graphs to fuzzy (quasi) superhypergraphs as a new concept. We have modeled the fuzzy superhypergraphs as complex superhypernetworks in order to make a relation between labeled objects in the form of details and generalities. Indeed, the structure of fuzzy (quasi) superhypergraphs collects groups of labeled objects and analyzes them in the form of the part to part of objects, the part of objects to the whole group of objects, and the whole to the whole group of objects at the same time. …

A New Type Of Neutrosophic Set In Pythagorean Fuzzy Environment And Applications To Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Mahmut Can Bozyıgıt, Murat Olgun, Florentin Smarandache, Mehmet Unver

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we introduce the concepts of Pythagorean fuzzy valued neutrosophic set (PFVNS) and Pythagorean fuzzy valued neutrosophic (PFVNV) constructed by considering Pythagorean fuzzy values (PFVs) instead of numbers for the degrees of the truth, the indeterminacy and the falsity, which is a new extension of intuitionistic fuzzy valued neutrosophic set (IFVNS). By means of PFVNSs, the degrees of the truth, the indeterminacy and the falsity can be given in Pythagorean fuzzy environment and more sensitive evaluations are made by a decision maker in decision making problems compared to IFVNSs. In other words, such sets enable a decision maker …

A Mathematical Model For The Energy Stored In Green Roofs, Maria Aguareles, Marc Calvo-Schwarzwalder, Francesc Font, Timothy G. Myers

All Works

A simple mathematical model to estimate the energy stored in a green roof is developed. Analytical solutions are derived corresponding to extensive (shallow) and intensive (deep) substrates. Results are presented for the surface temperature and energy stored in both green roofs and concrete during a typical day. Within the restrictions of the model assumptions the analytical solution demonstrates that both energy and surface temperature vary linearly with fractional leaf coverage, albedo and irradiance, while the effect of evaporation rate and convective heat transfer is non-linear. It is shown that a typical green roof is significantly cooler and stores less energy …
