Due to the increasing availability of space travel as not only a scientific exploration but a commercial exploration, there is a need for an onsite repair station that can be deployed in the event of aircraft maintenance, damage, or failure. The purpose of this project is to develop a soil monitoring system that can remotely sense and relay soil conditions back to a user. The deMETER soil probe, Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest, is designed to aid hobbyist gardeners, small-scale farms, and nurseries to monitor their dynamic soil conditions and maximize their harvest. The probe is a self-powered system that can monitor the moisture and essential nutrients of the soil profile to determine which areas should receive water and fertilizer. Students have been working on the development of wearable hydration sensors at the startup company RooSense. The goal of the company is to develop a lightweight wearable sensor that enables the user to know their hydration level, thus elevating their performance goals. To measure the hydration of the wearer, the sodium and other salt ions are collected from the user’s sweat as they exercise. This sweat is analyzed as it is collected to give the user an exact level of hydration, so they know how much fluids they need. The objective of this project would be to design and prototype an automated, light and temperature sensing window blinds system. The device would detect temperature, both inside and outside, and incoming sunlight to determine proper window blind position for maximum energy savings. Blood pressure is considered a primary vital sign that is regularly monitored in a healthcare setting. Current blood pressure measurement equipment lacks reproducible measurements which leads to questionable accuracy. Therefore, there is a need for an accurate and reproducible blood pressure measurement device that can take remote measurements. This project will be designed in The University of Akron's biomedical engineering capstone course. The goal of this senior design project is to design and fabricate a blood pressure measuring device that meets the customer requirements and engineering requirements identified by the team.

The Smart Parking Deck employs elementary circuit design elements and mobile application development. Each device module uses laser proximity sensors to check the availability of an individual parking space and a Zigbee unit to communicate with the adjacent device module. The modules are connected to a network hub that manages all of the incoming and outgoing parking data. This data is displayed on the mobile application. The system is easily manageable and energy efficient, significantly decreasing the costs associated with other smart parking systems on the market. Sandia National Laboratories has requested a fully mechanical device to close a circuit after launch has occurred and the device enters a vacuum. Intended for applications in rockets and missiles, the device must fit in a 36 degree wedge with a 6.8 inch radius that is 6 inches in height and be ready to bolt onto a rocket. The pressure switch must be prevented from actuating until a launch acceleration ranging from 20 to 27g is detected. Since water is an important resource and not all communities around the world can afford to be liberal with their water needs; it has become important to use available water as efficiently as possible, especially in agriculture. For the purpose of reducing the overwatering of crops, an unattended ground moisture sensor can be implemented to measure the moisture level in the soil surrounding the plants.
